Substance and style make an elegant pair in the rear-wheel-drive 2009 Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class luxury sedan, which this year receives a few updates, including a new grille, larger side mirrors, restyled taillights and rear bumper, and a revised COMAND interface. Controlled via a seven-speed automatic transmission, the CLS550's 5.5L V8 engine unleashes 382 hp and 391 lb-ft of torque, while the 6.2L CLS63 AMG V8 stomps out 507 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque. The CLS550 gets to 60 mph in 5.4 seconds, while the AMG achieves 0-60 mph in a slim 4.3 seconds, helped along by an enhanced seven-speed automatic transmission that provides incredibly fast gear changes. EPA-estimated fuel economy for the CLS550 is 14 mpg city/21 mpg hwy, while the AMG gets 12 mpg city/18 mpg hwy. Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class standard safety features include antilock brakes, stability control, active front head restraints and a super-supply of airbags. In addition, when sensors predict an impending collision, the sunroof closes, the seatbelts tighten and the passenger seat moves into position for optimal airbag protection.
