A number of auctions occur in the Monterey area during the Pebble Beach Concours weekend, providing opportunities for buyers looking to add to their stable or owners looking to sell a vehicle. For all car enthusiasts, the auctions are another type of car show, with a wide variety of vehicles from the rare to the obscure, and charged by the electric atmosphere of the actual sale on the auction block.
The Pebble Beach Concours weekend concluded Sunday night, Aug. 17, after the Best of Show winner was announced on the green, with the second night of the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance Auction presented by Gooding & Company. Total sales numbers for the two nights topped $64 million.
The first night of the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance Auction, the prized 1937 Bugatti Type 57SC Atalante Coupe from the Williamson Bugatti Collection set an all-time Pebble Beach auction record, selling for $7.92 million (all selling prices include auction commission). Two other cars also drew record sale prices, a 1901 Packard Model C Dos-à-Dos Runabout at $214,500, and a 1914 Stutz Series E Bearcat at $1.375 million.
Also on Saturday night, Oprah Winfrey's Charity Car Collection sold for $716,000, with the proceeds to benefit the annual Arts and Culture Workshop at the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa. Vehicles in the collection included a 954 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing, a 1988 Rolls-Royce Corniche II Convertible that was a gift from John Travolta, and a 1997 Aston Martin DB7 Volante.
Highlights of the second night included a 1959 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spider at $3.63 million; a 1938 Alfa Romeo 6C 2300B Mille Miglia, known as "Sleeping Beauty," at $2.585 million; a 1931 Bentley 4 1/2 Litre Sports Tourer at $1.76 million; a 1962 Gulf Oil Chevrolet Corvette at $1.485 million; and a 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB Alloy Long-Nose at $1.375 million. Twenty cars sold for more than $1 million over the two nights.
The first Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport, a new open-top version of the Veyron 16.4 that was unveiled in front of The Lodge on Saturday, was also sold at the Pebble Beach Auction for $3.19 million, with the premium over the asking price of 1.4 million euros (about $2 million) going to charity.
Monterey Sports & Classic Car Auction
The Monterey Sports & Classic Car Auction, owned by RM Auctions, was held on Aug. 17-18 at the Portola Plaza Hotel in downtown Monterey with total sales of $44 million, just shy of last year's $46 million record. Twelve cars did top the $1 million mark, with two above $2 million. The chart-topper was a 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta that sold for $4.51 million.
Also selling above the $2 million mark was a 1933 Rolls-Royce Phantom II Special Town Car. A one-off design with coachwork by Brewster, this car was the first of only three to be built and the only one of the three that retains the original bodywork.
Just missing the $2 million threshold was a yellow 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 Berlinetta that sold for $1.925 million, while a 1956 Ferrari 250 GT Tour de France Berlinetta, finished in striking light-blue livery, reached a high bid of $3.9 million but did not sell.
This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona, and two examples of the highly coveted Spyder version sold at the Monterey Sports Car Auction: a black 1973 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Spyder at $1.485 million, and a red 1972 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Spyder at $1.1275. Seven of the 12 cars sold for over $1 million were Ferraris.
The 1958 Chrysler Diablo Convertible Coupe concept car, one of the featured vehicles of the auction, reached a high bid of $1.2 million, but did not sell.

Other Monterey Auctions
At Quail Lodge on Aug. 15, the 11th annual Bonhams & Butterfields sale of exceptional motorcars and automobilia set records with total sales of more than $21.7 million. The highlight was an ex-Pierre Boncompagni, Ecurie Nice, 1939 Talbot-Lago T150 C SS, in remarkably original condition, that sold for $4.3-million, setting a world record for that marque.
A 1960 Jaguar E2A Prototype "Missing Link" race car also set a record, selling for $4.5 million. The highly important 1936 Lagonda EPE 97, known as the most famous Lagonda of all, went for $1.4-million, also setting a world record.
The Sports and Muscle in Monterey Auction, conducted by Russo and Steele Collector Automobile Auctions, was also held Aug. 16-17, at the Monterey Marriott. As the name implies, the focus at Russo and Steel is on sports cars and muscle cars.
