Remember the Acura TSX Sport Wagon?
By all measures, the Acura TSX Sport Wagon should have been an enthusiast's dream come true. Acura took the TSX -- which was fun to drive, fuel-efficient and dead reliable -- and made it into a wagon for even more practicality. It should have been the darling of automotive enthusiasts everywhere, right?
Unfortunately, Honda's luxury brand swung and missed... hard. While the regular TSX and the European Accord Tourer that served as the basis for the Acura wagon were available with a 6-speed manual transmission, the TSX Sport Wagon could only be bought with an ancient 5-speed automatic. Furthermore, while the regular TSX had the option of a 3.5-liter V6 that put out an unusually muscular 280 horsepower, the wagon was relegated to the 2.4-liter 4-cylinder -- but with only 201 hp, despite its rev-happy VTEC character. Additionally, because it was larger than a regular TSX, the Sport Wagon weighed more, so it ended up feeling underpowered, and the extra weight wasn't much help in the corners, either. More weight and less power makes Jack a dull boy.
Admittedly, Acura did a few things right with the TSX Sport Wagon. The car is very well-proportioned, and I think it's even sleeker than its sedan brother. The interior was pretty attractive, too, with premium-looking materials and a handsome steering wheel. And the TSX Sport Wagon also could carry a good amount of stuff, with more than 60 cu ft. of cargo room with the rear seats folded down. In other words, the Sport Wagon did manage to get the "wagon" part right, even if the "sport" part was questionable.
While many people passed on the TSX Sport Wagon when it first went on sale, it could now be a great option for someone who just wants a reliable, fuel-efficient premium wagon. Right now, there are 100 TSX Sport Wagons on Autotrader across the country, with an average price of just under $20,000. And most Sport Wagons seem to have fewer than 100,000 miles, which means that there's still a lot of life left in them.
