It's only fitting that the Washington Auto Show opens on the heels of Congress' return from recess. With Washington's eyes on Detroit automakers and a growing emphasis on the greening of the automotive industry, this auto show provides a forum for key policy makers, auto industry leaders and environmental visionaries to come together to support and promote progressive innovations within the industry.

High-profile visitors, car enthusiasts and car shoppers will get the chance to explore more than 700 new makes and models from 42 manufacturers. And this year is shaping up to be a great—and green—show. Manufacturers are promising more interactive exhibits, more new models, more concepts and prototypes and more high-tech breakthroughs.

Displaying more green cars than any other major US auto show, the Washington Auto Show is introducing the Advanced Technology Superhighway. This 65,000-square-foot exhibit will showcase technological and safety advancements as well as alternative fuels, including electric, clean diesel, natural gas, advanced petroleum, biofuels, ethanol and hydrogen.

The exhibit is produced in coordination with the US. Environmental Protection Agency, Department of Energy and Department of Transportation and promises to create a "central location" where key legislators and regulatory officials can tour the industry's latest innovations in fuel efficiency and safety.

The big buzz this year is Green Car Journal's unveiling of the Green Car Vision Award at the start of the show. The five finalists for this award, given to cars that aren't yet available but show a lot of eco-promise, are the Nissan Leaf, CODA Sedan, Ford Focus BEV, Mercedes-Benz F-Cell and Toyota Prius PHV.

Other fuel-alternatives expected to make an appearance are Honda's hydrogen fuel-cell powered sedan, FCX Clarity, and the four-passenger Cadillac Converj, GM's electric-propulsion design. Two concept all-stars that will be featured are the all-electric BMW ActiveE and the Hyundai Blue-Will hybrid hatchback.

Not to be upstaged, Ford's fuel-efficient 2011 Fiesta hatchback will be in the spotlight. Its compact size, sporty driving and premium features make it a strong new competitor in the compact car category. And speaking of compact, Volvo's sleek and sporty C30 is on the roster, too.

For pure adrenaline junkies, the Lexus LFA supercar will be on display along with the V10 525-horsepower Audi RS Spyder 5.2 FSI. Two American classics, the completely revamped Chevrolet Camaro and 2011 Mustang V-6 coupe with all-new aluminum engine, will put in an appearance as well.

AutoTrader.com will also  be on the scene with a live interactive online game called "MATCH IT!" where players can win $25,000 toward the purchase of a car listed on AutoTrader.com. Practice the game online at www.autotrader.com/win.
