Buying a car, in general, can be a painful experience! At Exeter Subaru, once we got past the usual games car salespeople play when it comes to trade-in value, the experience became mostly positive. Being a senior citizen, and a woman, I felt I had to be cautious. Their first offer for my 2006 Honda Odyssey EX in good condition was insulting . . . under $1500! After phone calls, and in my estimation some game playing with numbers, we reached a more acceptable offer for the trade-in. After this rather uncomfortable start, when I really felt like walking out, things went well. Jon Dube, the actual salesperson (not the one who was dickering trade-in value), was friendly and fairly knowledgeable, and if I had a question he couldn't answer, he investigated and found the answer. It is interesting to me that Exeter Subaru, as a rule, does not hire experienced car sales people. In fact, they hire people who have never worked in a car dealership before. Something about wanting to train them without a previous bias, I think. This might be a good thing, but could leave the buyer feeling she is dealing with "people in training". I love my new car and it arrived when they said it would. I get the feeling I will like dealing with the service department. Overall a good experience. My rating of average is largely based on the 'bad taste in my mouth" about the trade-in value. If you are trying to do your best for the customer, why wouldn't you find the best trade-in value right away -- and then come back to the customer with that? I felt like they were trying to take advantage of me by seeing if I would bite on the first ridiculously low offer.

I wanted an all-wheel-drive sedan that got great mileage, and the Subaru Legacy fit the bill. The Exeter Subaru website showed one "in transit" with the options/color combination that I wanted, so I emailed John Webster (being a fellow Canadian) to inquire about it. We exchanged a few emails, and John was knowledgeable, efficient, and courteous. He notified me when the vehicle arrived on the lot, but when I went in to see it, John was waiting on another customer, so he excused himself from his other client, introduced himself to me, and led me over to Todd Frampton's desk. Todd took over seamlessly from there, taking me on a test drive and explaining the features of Subarus in general and of the Legacy specifically. I later learned that it was only his third day on the job. He was friendly, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic. I negotiated the price with Dan Maynes, the Sales Manager, who was also very nice, professional, and willing to be flexible to make the deal. When I went back to pick up the car a few days later, I met with Dan Bottomley, who was both friendly and efficient. All-in-all, it was a great car-buying experience (a phrase I have never used in the past!), and I love my Legacy. Exeter Subaru has the friendliness staff I have ever dealt with at a dealership--everyone made me feel at ease and I never felt any pressure. I will definitely buy my next Subaru from Exeter Subaru!
