Although getting locked into a three-year contract for a fossil fuel-guzzling vehicle that I only use for seven hours a month turned out to be a decision that I regretted, I am very grateful to Suburban Chevrolet Cadillac for helping me navigate the confusing world of car leases and dealerships. When I met Katie, big financial decisions seemed like rocket science to me, I'd survived most of my twenties without driving, and I couldn't even tell a Chevrolet from a Ford. Then my estranged father stepped in and said he would help me get over the hurdle of a down payment, if I would just, for the love of God, stop talking about how I biked everywhere. We tested the waters at a Ford dealership first, and believe me, after getting rejected because of the bad credit that I didn't even know I had, I can now tell the difference between Chevy (rhymes with "every!") and Ford (rhymes with "Fjord" - the unbridgeable distance between you and any vehicle they will lend you). Feeling rejected, unprepared, and altogether inferior, we regrouped at Suburban Chevrolet Cadillac. What a world of difference! The cars were pretty, the atmosphere was friendly and warm, and the name carried a hint of ritzy French sophistication that made me feel like I wasn't just supporting a homegrown state industry but an upscale European one too. That's like buying a fair-trade tie-dyed dress from a downtown boutique that is somehow both handmade by rural Indian craftswomen and hand-picked by a small local business. It's an all-around feel-good purchase (that you'll regret by summer-time)! Katie was patient, knowledgeable, honest, reassuring, and helped get me the best deal possible on a new car. She explained all of the paperwork, showed me all of the vehicle features, and respectfully listened to my dad's old-world haggling without one sign that she was as embarrassed for me as I was. (Honestly, Dad. This was about ME. I'm sure my wobbly, dewy-eyed, baby-bird steps on the path to adulthood were adorable enough to guarantee that nobody would try to overcharge me.) Anyway, Katie and my Dad are the reason that I have a great, flawless, functioning vehicle. It's helped me get a second job, taken my boyfriend to work for a month when his clunker broke down, spared me from many a snowstorm and rain shower, and enabled me to sleep even later past my alarm every morning. If my landlord evicts me, I have a vehicle to live in now. Need an emergency lift? I can pick you up now! If I want to drive to Meijer to get cat food at three in the morning, nothing - absolutely nothing - on God's green Earth can stop me. But I signed up for a car in September, with the lean winter months ahead. Now that the weather is warmer, and the bike lanes are clear of ice and snowplow rubble, my soul is stirring. It's saying: Rachel. You're a bicyclist. Don't spend one-fifth of your monthly income on a single-use automobile. You might as well be putting your money directly into one of the Koch brothers' offshore bank accounts. Forget about your family's worries, forget about the coming winter, and just go back to fighting the Man the only way you know how: by bicycling to your big-box corporate retail job and back every day.

Drew worked hard to help meet our specific needs/requirements (can a kayak fit IN it?), and was knowledgeable, efficient, hard-working and helpful. We were glad to buy a car from Drew. The dealership handled the deal smoothly, too. The only thing we didn't like about the experience was a last-minute, first-time push to sell a variety of maintenance protection packages that didn't leave time for research or thought.
