When a new 911 is announced, it's almost a guarantee that a cabriolet version isn't far behind. Porsche kept with that trend as it announced its new 911 Carrera Cabriolet. Set to go on sale very shortly after the 911 coupe, this new cabriolet is no surprise in its looks, which is to say it looks exactly like its coupe sibling.

This time around, Porsche has perfected the mechanicals of the soft top, mirroring the roofline of the coupe perfectly, which Porsche says is a first for them. Part of that new roof's framing is liberal use of magnesium, keeping the weight of the roof down, and therefore the weight of the entire car. This helps get the top up faster in the event of a sudden downpour, and also helps the car be more agile while trying to outrun said storm back home.

Also aiding in those driving characteristics is a longer wheelbase and wider front track when compared to the outgoing model, helping the car feel more planted in the corners. A new electro-mechanical steering system helps the driver feel all the signals coming from the road through the corner, and out back one of two engines powers the car out of the twisty bits. The base Carrera Cabriolet will get a 350-horsepower 3.4-liter flat-six hung way out back, and the Carrera S will get a 400-horsepower 3.8-liter engine.

The car will go on sale in the spring of 2012, just in time for top-down driving season. If you're looking to pick up the base car, prepare to part with $97,300, and if you're interested in the sportier S model, your wallet will be $108,000 lighter.
