Hot on the heels of winning the 2012 North American Car of the Year with its Elantra, Hyundai unveils a new variant of its ever-expanding Elantra line: the Elantra GT.

Designed to compete directly with the Ford Focus, Mazda3, and Volkswagen Golf, the Elantra GT has been fitted with sport-tuned suspension and a high-revving 1.8-liter inline four-cylinder gasoline engine making 148 horsepower. Not only is the Elantra GT sporty and versatile, it's also fuel-efficient. The EPA has estimated the Elantra GT will achieve a best-in class 28 MPG in the city and 39 MPG on the highway.

The Elantra GT stands at the next incarnation of the Hyundai design language: "Fluidic Sculpture." Remaining true to its fluidic DNA, the Elantra has an aggressive low profile, sleek side mirrors, and minimized tire gaps. Up front, Hyundai's signature hexagonal grille-complete with chrome accents-flows into the hood. Sharp projection headlamps, fog lights, and available 17-inch alloy wheels with chrome spears complete the Elantra GT's sporting, modern design.

The Elantra GT's impressive fuel economy ratings come from highly advanced engine technology and a lightweight, yet incredibly strong body structure. At 2,784 pounds when equipped with an automatic transmission, the Elantra GT is lighter than its competitors while offering more interior room. The Elantra GT can comfortably seat five people or four passengers plus long items like golf clubs or snowboards, perfect for customers who don't wish to sacrifice driving dynamics or fuel efficiency to suit their active lifestyle.

The 2013 Elantra GT will go on sale this summer.

What it means to you: With the Elantra GT, Hyundai reshapes its award-winning compact sedan to take on some of the best selling hot hatches from Japan, Germany and the US.
