  • 8,709 2012 Honda Pilot and Acura MDX potentially affected
  • Fuel tank component could detach, resulting in fuel leak
  • Fire or injury may result, but none has been reported

Although no fires or injuries have been reported, Honda has voluntarily recalled 8,709 Pilot and Acura MDX SUVs over concerns that a faulty component in the fuel tank could detach and result in a fuel leak.

Honda says the supplier of the vent shut float (VSF) valve case, a component of the vehicle's vapor recovery system, identified that the material used for the part does not meet design specifications. If the VSF valve becomes detached from its mounting on the inside of the fuel tank, a fuel leak may occur, increasing the risk of fire.

Honda and Acura dealers will inspect the VSF case to determine its assembly date. If necessary, Honda will replace the fuel tank assembly at no charge.

This recall is the first for the 2012 Pilot. Last year, over 300,000 2009 to 2011 Pilots were recalled to address potentially faulty seatbelt stitching. A small number of 2012 Acura MDX vehicles have already been recalled to inspect a possible issue with the side curtain airbag inflator.

The voluntary recall process helps to ensure the safety of drivers and passengers by investigating complaints and defects, identifying faulty parts or production methods, and quickly correcting any potentially dangerous issues.

Honda will begin notifying owners in mid-March and encourages them to bring their vehicles in for inspection upon receiving notice. At that time, owners can also determine if their vehicle is affected by visiting www.recalls.honda.com or www.recalls.acura.com, or by calling 800-999-1009. Alternatively, the NHTSA's website lists all automotive recalls. Search safercar.org for the Honda Pilot recall using campaign ID 12V063000.

What it means to you: Honda is recalling 8,700 2012 Pilot and Acura MDX SUVs due to a potential fuel leak. Owners will be notified beginning in mid-March.
