  • GM recalling 50,001 models of crossover siblings
  • Dealers will tighten wiper arms, which may become loose under snow
  • Recall only affects models sold in cold weather areas

General Motors is recalling 50,000 SUVs to fix potentially defective windshield wipers. The automaker and the government's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recently announced the recall, which affects 2011 and 2012 models of the Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse and GMC Acadia crossovers.

The recall, which only impacts vehicles sold in cold weather areas, stems from an issue with snow and ice buildup on the windshield of affected SUVs. According to the NHTSA, the buildup can restrict the movement of the wiper arm, which could cause the wiper to become inoperative and may lead to a crash.

The NHTSA and General Motors says the recall is restricted to Acadia, Enclave and Traverse SUVs sold in Alaska, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Wyoming and the District of Columbia.

According to General Motors, recall notices will be mailed out shortly to owners of affected vehicles, who will be instructed to take their SUV to a local dealership for inspection. If necessary, technicians will tighten the wiper arm nuts, which will provide the wipers with enough force to overcome heavy accumulation of ice and snow.

General Motors says that owners with questions about the recall can call Chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020, Buick at 1-800-521-7300, or GMC at 1-800-462-8782. Concerned owners can also contact the NHTSA directly at 1-888-327-4236.

The Acadia, Enclave and Traverse have been sales leaders in the increasingly popular midsize crossover segment. All three models are being refreshed for the 2013 model year to include updated interiors and exteriors, GM's newest infotainment system and an industry-first middle airbag, which is designed to deploy from the center of the front seats in the event of a side impact on the opposite side of the vehicle.

What it means to you: Although this is a minor recall, it could be important for Acadia, Enclave and Traverse owners living in the Snow Belt.
