2014 Volvo V60 Could Come to the U.S.

Volvo may bring its midsize V60 hatchback to the U.S. next year. That's the latest from the automaker, which is looking to expand its North American lineup after the demise of the C30 hatchback and C70 hardtop convertible.

Volvo says it will decide sometime this year whether the V60 will come to the U.S. The S60-based 5-door has been on sale in Europe since 2011. Offered in front- or all-wheel drive, the V60's success in hatchback-friendly Europe may not translate to U.S. buyers.

But the brand is eager for new models to bolster its shrinking lineup. In addition to dropping the C30 and C70, Volvo has canceled its S40 sedan and the V50 and V70 wagons in the last few years. Today's U.S. lineup is Volvo's smallest since 2000. It includes only the S60 and S80 sedan and the XC60, XC70 and XC90 crossovers.

If the V60 does come to the States, it also may bring along Volvo's most efficient powertrain. European V60 models offer a diesel-electric plug-in hybrid variant known as the V60 Plug-In Hybrid.

Offered with only a 6-speed automatic, the V60 Plug-In Hybrid uses standard all-wheel drive. Its front wheels are driven by a 215-horsepower diesel powerplant, while rear wheels are powered by a 70-hp electric motor. The V60 Plug-In Hybrid can travel around 30 miles in purely electric mode, while fuel economy is expected to reach 124 miles per gallon equivalent.

Should the V60 come to the States, we'd expect its starting price to roughly mirror that of the S60. That means it will start around $33,000 with shipping. Upscale versions, however, could cost well into the $40,000 range.

While Volvo has yet to make a final choice about bringing the V60 stateside, we'll be sure to report when the brand reaches its decision.
