  • Refueling Stop app rolling out in A3
  • System even considers type of fuel required

Audi is rolling out a new app that helps drivers find the cheapest gas. Dubbed Refueling Stop, the app will make its debut this year in the compact Audi A3 hatchback. Other Audi models will likely add the feature, which is similar to technology already used by General Motors and Ford.

According to Audi, Refueling Stop gets its information from an online listing of gas stations. When a driver selects Refueling Stop on the in-car navigation system, the service scans its database to match the driver's current location or destination. It even considers whether a car requires diesel fuel or regular gasoline.

Drivers looking for fuel can sort gas stations by distance or, more importantly, by price. Once a driver has chosen a gas station, getting there is easy. The driver simply clicks on the station using Refueling Stop, which transfers the location to the navigation system.

The app is rolling out now in the Audi A3, which is sold in the U.S. as a 5-door hatchback. Since the A3 offers diesel or gas powertrains, the app might be especially useful for drivers in diesel models. That's especially true if they're in an unfamiliar city and aren't sure which local gas stations offer diesel fuel.

While the app is making its debut in the A3, it will be added to other Audi models in the coming years. The brand says it eventually plans to offer Refueling Stop in the A4, A5, A6, A7 and A8 models, along with the Q3, Q5 and Q7 SUVs. That leaves out only high-performance drivers who pick a R8 or TT sports car.

While Refueling Stop is new to Audi, the technology is similar to apps used by Ford's MyFord Touch and GM's MyLink infotainment systems. Both systems provide drivers with a listing of nearby gas stations, along with updated fuel prices.

Audi says the Refueling Stop feature will be standard in all A3 models that include the brand's navigation system and its optional online Bluetooth connectivity feature.

What it means to you: The new Audi cheap gas app, Refueling Stop, can be helpful to drivers searching for the area's lowest-priced fuel.
