  • The 2014 XC60 debuts with many updates to interior, exterior
  • Interior offers tons of tech, including new Sensus Connected Touch system
  • No changes under hood; however, Volvo working on new family of engines

As we first reported from this year's Geneva Auto Show, the 2014 Volvo XC60 luxury crossover will receive numerous updates, and the good men of Swedish House Mafia were recruited to spice up the 2014 XC60's official global debut last Friday.

If you're drawing a blank on Swedish House Mafia, don't worry -- so did we. Turns out they're a recently dissolved electronic dance music trio that briefly reunited to record a music video of the new 2014 XC60 driving through Sweden's beautiful landscape. The video is set to "Leave the World Behind," an early Swedish House Mafia song that features vocals by the ethereally voiced singer Lune. You can check it out at www.leavetheworldbehind.com/.

As for the XC60 itself, well, there's a lot to talk about. The changes start in front, where beefier headlights highlight a redesigned fascia that evokes the larger XC90. The 2014 XC60 also ditches most of its black exterior trim in favor of body-color accents, which we think yields a more upscale appearance.

The big news, though, is inside, where the new Sensus Connected Touch option transforms Volvo's formerly archaic infotainment interface into a modern 7-inch touchscreen. You can even operate it with gloved fingers, thanks to infrared technology that doesn't require your finger to serve as a conductor of electricity. (Yes, that's how traditional "capacitive" touchscreens work.) Furthermore, Sensus Connected Touch is based on Google's Android operating system, enabling neat technology tie-ins such as Google maps, full Internet browsing with Wi-Fi, downloadable apps, email and various streaming music services.

The 2014 XC60's cabin also boasts revised wood trim and a configurable digital TFT gauge cluster that replaces the old analog array. Among the XC60's numerous safety aids, we're particularly impressed with the new Active High Beam Control system, which automatically shields oncoming cars from high-beam glare, so you'll never have to dim your high beams again.

Under the hood, no changes have been announced, so we expect the 2014 XC60 to forge ahead with its familiar base 3.2-liter inline-6 and optional twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6. However, Volvo has recently confirmed that a new family of 4-cylinder engines is in the works, presumably with turbocharging. Our crystal ball says that the XC60's relatively inefficient 3.2-liter engine will be supplanted by a turbo four in the not-too-distant future.

What it means to you: Look for the 2014 Volvo XC60 in dealerships this summer.
