  • 2014 S63 AMG offers 577 horsepower, 664 lb-ft
  • New styling based on redesigned W222 S-Class
  • Now features standard 4MATIC all-wheel drive

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG is official. Mercedes confirmed details about the full-size performance sedan earlier today, announcing final specs and showing photos ahead of the car's debut later this year at the Frankfurt Auto Show.

Performance enthusiasts will be most interested in power, and the S63 AMG certainly has it. The sedan's latest version makes 577 hp and a whopping 664 lb-ft of torque. That's a boost of 41 hp and 74 lb-ft over the already muscular outgoing model. The power comes from a 5.5-liter, twin-turbocharged V8.

Besides horsepower, the biggest S63 AMG news is a new drivetrain. Like the 2014 E63 AMG, the S63 AMG is ditching its usual rear-wheel drive for the brand's 4MATIC all-wheel drive. That will make the sedan more capable in rough weather -- and it should help the S63 more easily deliver its immense power to the ground.

The S63 AMG also boasts a completely new look inside and out. The "super sedan" is based on the all-new W222 S-Class, which comes out later this year. That means distinctive new styling with impressive curves, and -- in the S63's case -- an enlarged front bumper, sporty ground effects and a quad exhaust system.

The new design helped the 2014 S63 AMG shed some weight, as the latest S-Class uses far more aluminum construction than its predecessor. Mercedes estimates the weight savings over last year's S63 to be around 220 pounds.

According to Mercedes, the S63's 7-speed automatic helps it reach 60 miles per hour in less than four seconds on its way to a top speed of 186 mph. Those are big numbers for a full-size luxury sedan such as the S63.

Although Mercedes has not yet announced pricing for the S63 AMG, we expect the model to start somewhere near today's base price of $141,000 with shipping. We'll find out more this fall as the Frankfurt Auto Show approaches.

What it means to you: The 2014 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG raises the stakes in the full-size performance sedan game with 577 hp and all-wheel drive.
