What Is It?

Unveiled yesterday at the 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show, the Infiniti Q30 concept foreshadows a future in which Generation X and Y sensibilities increasingly define the luxury car landscape. We've seen moves in this direction already, with premium compact offerings such as the new Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class, and the Q30 is Infiniti's corporate vision of what's next. Described in the company's press release as "not a coupe, not a hatch and not a crossover," the Infiniti Q30 targets younger luxury buyers who defy convention and are drawn to disruptive new products. Imagine a twenty- or thirtysomething couple looking to upgrade from a Nissan Juke -- that's where the Q30 comes in.

Will They Ever Sell It?

Infiniti refers to the Q30 as "the design precursor for Infiniti's future compact premium entry," with production scheduled to begin in 2015, so we expect something very much like this concept to hit dealerships within the next few years. Tellingly, the beautifully detailed interior appears to be a nearly finished product, which usually means a production version isn't far off. Indeed, aside from a few show-car details, such as carbon-fiber trim and concealed door handles, the Q30 looks ready to hit the road, though Infiniti has yet to discuss powertrain details.

Why It's Important

Unless you count the venerable J30 crossover (formerly known as the EX), Infiniti doesn't have an answer to hip, affordable luxury offerings such as the CLA, the CLA-based GLA crossover or the upcoming Audi A3. As such, a Q30-inspired compact could be just what the doctor ordered for Infiniti's aging lineup. The Q30 also models the brand's expressive new design language; look for similar flourishes on every new Infiniti going forward.
