  • Porsche Macan teased ahead of LA debut
  • SUV will be smaller, less expensive than Cayenne
  • Expected to come out this winter, offer V6 engines

Porsche has released several preview images of its upcoming Macan SUV ahead of this year's Los Angeles Auto Show. The photos, which show the Macan both on paved roads and muddy trails, give us the best look yet at Porsche's latest model.

While we'll see more when the Macan is officially unveiled in LA, Porsche's photos go a long way toward setting our expectations. On the outside, the Macan looks a lot like a Cayenne, which makes sense, as it slots below the Cayenne in Porsche's lineup. But it's clearly smaller than the flagship Porsche SUV, with a small rear window and a roofline that tapers off in back.

Porsche has not yet released photos of the interior, but we don't expect many surprises. That's because all of Porsche's models use roughly the same interior design, with a raised center console borrowed from the brand's Carrera GT supercar. As for features, expect an available touchscreen navigation system and other high-end luxury car goodies.

Porsche is also keeping quiet about what's under the Macan's hood. That said, we expect a range of V6 engines. Think somewhere between 250 horsepower for the base model to nearly 400 horses for the top-of-the-line Macan trim. The transmission is also unknown, though some sources are reporting Porsche may fit the Macan with its dual-clutch PDK automatic.

The Macan is an important car for Porsche, as it sends the brand into an entirely new market. While the Cayenne faces off against midsize luxury SUVs such as the BMW X5 and Mercedes M-Class, the Macan goes after smaller models. Rivals will include the Audi Q5, the BMW X3, the Mercedes GLK and the Range Rover Evoque.

We're excited to learn more about the Macan, and Porsche is sure to tell us everything we want to know in LA. For those who just can't wait for specifics, expect pricing to start around $40,000 when the Macan reaches dealers this winter.

What it means to you: With the Porsche Macan, expect luxury and performance in a compact SUV package.
