  • BMW reveals minor X1 updates ahead of Detroit show
  • BMW X1 offers slight interior and exterior revisions
  • Engines remain the same; pricing not announced

BMW has officially announced that it's updating the compact X1 crossover for the 2015 model year. The automaker revealed the revised X1 ahead of this year's Detroit Auto Show, where the company will show off changes to the vehicle's exterior and interior, along with some new technology.

Updates to the BMW X1's exterior are very minimal. There's a revised bumper in front, along with new headlights that feature integrated running lamps. There's a new color, dubbed Sparkling Brown, which boasts a brown metallic hue. And there's a new 17-inch wheel with a V-spoke design. The X1's sides and rear end are unchanged.

Revisions to the inside are a little more drastic. Most X1 models gain a stitched instrument cluster hood, which the brand says will "add to the premium elegance." And three new interior accents are offered: high-gloss black, matte coral red and pearl-gloss chrome. The crossover also adds a protective stainless-steel finisher below the tailgate edge.

In terms of technology, the X1 also boasts a few updates for the latest model year. The most important is BMW's ConnectedDrive system, which is updated to the latest version. That means X1 drivers can now access BMW's Online Entertainment system, which provides online music access without requiring a smartphone. The X1 also gains the brand's ECO PRO Analyser, which helps improve environmentally friendly driving.

Under the hood, the 2015 X1 is the same as last year's model. That means two engines are available: a 240-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder and a 300-hp turbocharged 3.0-liter 6-cylinder. Four-cylinder X1 models offer a choice between rear- or all-wheel drive, while the 6-cylinder model comes only with all-wheel drive. Every X1 uses a 6-speed automatic.

While the X1 debuted only recently in the U.S., it's been out in Europe since 2008. As a result, many industry observers expect BMW to release an all-new X1 in the next few years. In the meantime, the model's latest updates should keep it fresh until the redesign comes.

What it means to you: The BMW X1 is receiving a few minor updates to keep it fresh.
