In-car technology is always evolving. Let's look at one of the hottest state-of-the-art features and see how it works and if it lives up to the hype. Nissan calls it Around View Monitor. The 2014 Nissan Rogue now offers this advanced driver's assist system -- a feature that used to be available only on pricier Infiniti models.

What It Does

Around View takes the standard "backup camera" feature to a whole new level by giving you a virtual 360-degree view around the car. Any feature that helps you navigate a tight space from every angle will be useful for all drivers at one time or another.

How It Works

Around View uses four wide-angle cameras mounted on the car -- one in front, one in back and one under each side mirror. The system links together all four camera views into a virtual 360-degree aerial view, which delivers the full lay of the land as you park or maneuver the car.

The system's split-screen monitor is intuitive. When you shift into reverse, it automatically features the rear camera view. When you shift back into drive, the front view pops up on the monitor. You also have the option of a full 180-degree front or rear view, as well as detailed side views, which can help you avoid curb damage to tires and rims.

Advancing Safety

The Moving Object Detection feature adds another layer of safety to the Around View system. All four sides of the car are sensored, and the panels will light up and chime where movement from an external object is detected. This provides added peace of mind if you have pets or small children around. With both features working in tandem, the 2014 Nissan Rogue is a true winner when traversing crowded parking lots.

A Techno Must-Have

Aside from the Rogue, Nissan's Around View is also available on vehicles such as the Nissan Quest, Nissan Pathfinder and Nissan Versa Note. If you're looking for the latest in safety and tech to enhance the driving experience, the Around View Monitor system belongs on your must-have list.
