  • Honda Odyssey earns 5-star NHTSA crash test rating
  • Odyssey gets 5-star front and side rating
  • Odyssey joins Sienna and Sedona among 5-star-rated vans

The 2014 Honda Odyssey has been awarded a 5-star crash-test rating from the federal government's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). That's the latest from the organization, which recently announced that the popular minivan earned the perfect rating after a battery of tests.

According to the NHTSA, the Odyssey's crash-test rating was comprised of two perfect 5-star scores and one 4-star score in the agency's three tests. Its best performance came in frontal and side-impact tests. The frontal test involves a 35-miles per hour crash into a barrier, while the side-impact assessment averages two test scores to determine how a car holds up in a collision from the side.

The Odyssey's lone 4-star rating came in the NHTSA's rollover assessment, which measures a car's likelihood of rolling over during difficult maneuvering. Even though the Odyssey didn't earn a perfect score in all three tests, the NHTSA averaged the scores together to give it a 5-star overall rating.

With its 5-star rating, the 2014 Honda Odyssey joins the Kia Sedona and Toyota Sienna among 2014 model vans that recently received perfect crash-test scores from the NHTSA. The boldly styled Nissan Quest has not yet been rated, while Chrysler's minivan twins, the Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan, earned 4-star ratings.

Shoppers interested in minivans will find it no surprise that the Odyssey earned a 5-star crash-test rating given the van's focus on safety. In addition to including a standard rearview camera, the Odyssey boasts standard anti-lock brakes, stability and traction control and curtain-side airbags for all three rows of seats.

The NHTSA isn't the only organization to praise the Odyssey's crash-test performance. The nonprofit Insurance Institute for Highway Safety also gave the Odyssey its top rating of Good, noting that the van performed well in its frontal, side-impact and roof-strength tests.

What it means to you: New government crash-test scores confirm that the latest Honda Odyssey is a safe place for your family.
