Mazda Miata Celebrates 25th Anniversary at New York Auto Show
- Display of 15 Miata models
- New and earlier production models
- Racing versions and concept cars
Mazda will celebrate 25 years since the debut of its now-iconic roadster at the New York Auto Show with a display featuring 15 new and historic MX-5 Miata vehicles. Mazda Miata auto-show concepts, production vehicles and race cars will all be included for the anniversary celebration.
Now in its third generation, the Mazda Miata, or MX-5 Miata as it's officially named, was a hit right from the start. It debuted at the 1989 Chicago Auto Show and arrived in showrooms that year as a 1990 model. Inspired by lightweight sports cars such as the Lotus Elan, the Mazda Miata was praised for superb dynamics at an affordable price. Few cars could match its fun-to-drive quotient, and the Miata quickly proved to be a best seller.
In 1998, Mazda introduced a new MX-5 with taut bodywork and fixed headlights instead of the pop-up units of the first-gen car. For 2004 and 2005, the turbocharged Mazdaspeed MX-5 was added to the lineup.
Mazda introduced the current, third-generation Miata for the 2006 model year. The 2-seater is now available with a retractable hardtop instead of the standard cloth top. Available in base Sport, mid-range Club and top Grand Touring trims, the 2014 MX-5 Miata remains a top choice for enthusiast drivers or just about anyone else looking for sporty, open-top fun behind the wheel.
The model is showing its age, though, and weak recent sales figures reflect its staleness. Each of the first two Miata generations lasted eight years, while 2014 marks the ninth year for this version. New, affordable sports cars such as the Scion FR-S are new competition for the Miata, too. We're anxious to see the current Miata's fourth-generation replacement, but Mazda is mum on when to expect one.
What it means to you: A display of 15 new and historic Mazda Miata vehicles, including race cars and concepts, will show how the venerable sports car evolved over 25 years for performance on both road and track.
