2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Officially Rated at 650 Horsepower
- Chevrolet's new Corvette Z06 will make a muscular 650 horsepower
- New engine is also rated at 650 lb-ft of torque
- Z06 debuts early next year with 7-speed manual or 8-speed automatic transmissions
The 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 will put out a whopping 650 horsepower when it goes on sale early next year. Chevrolet finally confirmed engine specs for the newest Z06, which is now officially the most powerful Corvette ever built.
According to Chevrolet, the Z06's 650 hp will come from a 6.2-liter V8, which is supercharged in order to make the massive power. The 650-hp figure represents a 12-hp increase over the outgoing Corvette ZR1, which allows the Z06 to easily claim the title of most powerful Corvette. Meanwhile, the Z06's torque will stand at an equally muscular 650 lb-ft at 3,600 rpm -- once again, an increase over the ZR1's 604 lb-ft figure.
The Z06's huge power and torque numbers are notable outside of the Corvette world, too. The high-performance Z06 also takes down rivals such as the SRT Viper, which offers 640 hp, the Nissan GT-R, which touts 545 hp, and the Porsche 911 Turbo, which measures in at 520 horses. Even the exotic Ferrari 458 Italia only makes 570 hp.
So how will the new Z06's massive power figures help it perform? Given that the standard Corvette reaches 60 miles per hour in just 3.8 seconds with its 460 hp, we suspect the Z06 should be able to record a low 3-second time or even reach the high 2-second range. That would place it in contention with the GT-R and the 911 Turbo, even though those models have all-wheel drive, which helps for quick launches.
While Chevrolet has not yet released pricing for the new Z06, we do know a few other details about the high-performance Corvette, including its finalized styling, which was shown at this year's Detroit Auto Show. Chevrolet has also confirmed that the latest Z06 will give drivers a choice between a standard 7-speed manual transmission and an optional 8-speed automatic, which is a first for the high-performance Z06.
What it means to you: A 650-hp V8 will deliver supercar-like performance to the all-new 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06.
