  • 2015 RAM ProMaster City will compete in growing small cargo-van segment
  • Rivals will include Ford Transit Connect, Nissan NV200
  • ProMaster City is due out later this year or early in 2015

The rapidly expanding cargo-van segment will soon have yet another new member. So says Chrysler, which recently showed off the all-new ProMaster City, a small cargo van from its RAM truck brand.

Based on a European market FIAT van called the Doblo, the ProMaster City will slot below the current ProMaster full-size van in RAM's lineup. Rivals will include the Nissan NV200, Ford Transit Connect and the newly announced Chevrolet City Express. Unlike the larger ProMaster, the ProMaster City will come in just one body style, and it will offer only one engine. The smaller van, however, will be available in both passenger and cargo versions.

Under the hood of each ProMaster City will be a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder, which is rated to produce 178 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque. That makes the ProMaster City slightly more powerful than the Transit Connect -- which is rated between 169 and 173 hp depending on the engine -- and far more muscular than the NV200 (which offers a 131-hp 4-cylinder). Chrysler says that the extra power won't hurt gas mileage, though, noting that the ProMaster City boasts best-in-class fuel economy, which is certainly a bold claim before ratings are even finalized.

In terms of cargo volume, the ProMaster City also scores a victory. Chrysler says that it offers a whopping 131.7 cu ft. of cargo space, placing it ahead of the Transit Connect (at 128.6 cu ft.) and the NV200 (122.7 cu ft.).

With best-in-class power, claimed best-in-class fuel efficiency and best-in-class cargo volume, the ProMaster City looks to be the new top dog in the growing world of the small cargo van. We'll discover whether that proves true -- and we'll learn more details, such as pricing -- when we drive the van closer to its launch in late 2014 or early 2015.

What it means to you: The 2015 RAM ProMaster City sounds impressive on paper, so we're excited to spend some time behind the wheel.
