2013 Acura ILX: Chicago Auto Show
- Acura unveils the 2013 ILX at this year's Chicago Auto Show
- The all-new compact sedan is aimed at successful members of Generation Y
- Available with three drivetrain options including Acura's first ever hybrid
Riding the wave of excitement created by the debut of the ILX concept last month at the Detroit Auto Show, Acura officially releases the production version of its all-new compact sedan: the ILX. Based on the Honda Civic platform, the ILX opens up the Acura brand to a new audience with a new gateway vehicle with an all-new drivetrain.
Acura hopes to attract young, first-time luxury car buyers from Generation Y. Not only is the ILX small and luxurious, it is also eco-friendly. Acura will offer the ILX with three drivetrain options: a 2-liter inline-four cylinder gas engine producing 150 horsepower paired with a five-speed automatic transmission, a 2.4-liter inline-four cylinder producing 201 horsepower paired with a six-speed manual, and a hybrid model powered by both a 1.5-liter inline-four cylinder gasoline engine coupled with an "Integrated Motor Assist" electric motor. The ILX Hybrid will be Acura's first-ever hybrid offering and is expected to achieve 35 mpg in the city and 38 mpg on the highway.
The hybrid model utilizes the gasoline engine as the primary power source, while the 20-horsepower electric motor provides additional power when needed from the onboard lithium-ion battery pack. Together, the gasoline engine and electric motor produce 111 horsepower. During braking, the gasoline engine shuts down and the electric motor acts as a generator to recharge the battery pack. At stoplights, the 1.5-liter engine enters idle-stop mode to save fuel and reduce emissions.
Buyers will find the interior of the ILX to be both high quality and well appointed. The Premium Package features heated leather front seats, a 360-watt stereo system, a rear-view camera, and an Active Sound Cancellation system to make for a quieter cabin.
The 2013 Acura ILX is expected to go on sale and enter showrooms in the fall of 2012.
What it means to you: With its new gateway, the ILX, Acura looks to compete with other compact luxury sedans like the BMW 1-series for the hearts and minds of successful Gen-Y buyers.
