  • SRX rear DVD system updated for 2013.
  • Cadillac adding CUE technology.
  • System also gets new remote.

Car shoppers interested in a new kind of rear seat entertainment experience can get one in the 2013 Cadillac SRX. That's because the luxury crossover will offer a rear entertainment system that extends the brand's CUE infotainment technology to the backseats and uses a unique remote control designed for young passengers.

According to Cadillac, the 2013 SRX's available rear seat entertainment system features a Blu-Ray DVD player with two 8-inch flip-up screens on each headrest. While that's nothing new in the world of rear seat entertainment, the SRX's system has several more tricks designed to get buyers to spring for the optional feature. Chief among them is technology adapted from the automaker's CUE infotainment system, which allows drivers to pair up to 10 Bluetooth-enabled devices--including mobile phones, MP3 players and more--to the system at once.

"Having multiple media connectivity options really gives owners flexibility with entertainment, especially families," said Charlene Goike, GM's rear seat entertainment lead engineer. "One can easily pop in their camera's SD cards on the way home from their kid's sports games to let the young ones instantly relive the action."

But the SRX's rear seat entertainment system offers drivers more than just extra connectivity options for rear passengers. The feature also includes a new cordless remote control, which GM says is specifically designed for familiarity and ease of use. According to the automaker, the remote resembles a video game controller, giving young passengers a leg up on using the system. Of course, GM will also offer a quick reference sheet so all users can quickly learn the functions of each button on the remote.

In addition to increased connectivity and the new remote, Cadillac says the 2013 SRX's rear entertainment system also gains a pair of updated wireless headphones designed to fit more comfortably than earlier versions. The SUV's home-theatre-like entertainment system also gives drivers the ability to play Blu-Ray DVDs in the center-mounted front touchscreen when the vehicle is in Park.

According to Cadillac, the rear seat entertainment system is available as a $1,595 option on the 2013 SRX Luxury, Performance and Premium models, making it less expensive than similar systems in many rivals. A rear seat DVD entertainment system is a $2,400 option on the Lexus GX 460, for example, while it's a $1,970 extra in the Mercedes M-Class and a $2,500 option in the Range Rover Sport.

What it means to you: With its latest updates, the 2013 Cadillac SRX offers one of the most user-friendly and capable rear entertainment systems in the business--and at $1,595, it's a steal compared to similar systems in rivals.
