ADDITIONAL MODEL INFORMATION
2013 Chevrolet Malibu

  • New base 2.5-liter engine is more powerful than 2012 base engine
  • 2013 Malibu has more interior volume, standard safety equipment and available features than 2012 model
  • Price reduced on four of eight available trim levels

Chevrolet announced pricing for its redesigned 2013 Malibu mid-size sedan. While the price for the base LS trim level is higher than the comparable 2012 model's price, Chevrolet has reduced the prices for most better-equipped models. The updated Malibu also offers some advantages over the outgoing 2012 sedan.

Chevrolet offers the 2013 in eight trim levels, including two trim choices for the fuel-sipping Malibu Eco. Ranging from the base LS to the top LTZ, all 2013 Malibu models offer more interior volume than their 2012 counterparts. A new 2.5-liter 4-cylinder base engine is more powerful, with 197 horsepower compared with the outgoing 169-hp unit. The 2013 also has 10 airbags versus six in the 2012 Malibu, and a host of available comfort and convenience features.

The 2013 Malibu LS is priced at $22,390, a bump of $280 over the 2012 LS. The next step up, the Malibu 1LT, also sees a price hike; its 2012 MSRP (manufacturer's suggested retail price) is $24,005. Aside from the Malibu Eco models that were not offered as 2012 models, all other 2013 Malibus are priced lower than their 2012 equivalents. The window sticker of the turbocharged 3LT model reflects a significant $1,350 reduction. The top model, called 2LTZ, is now priced at $30,165. These prices exclude a $760 destination charge.

Newly available equipment for the 2013 Malibu is aimed at safety, comfort and convenience. The LTZ gets Chevy's MyLink, which includes a seven-inch LCD touchscreen and Bluetooth. Dual-zone climate control, a rear-view camera and high-tech driver assistance systems like lane departure warning and forward collision alert are also available on the Malibu for the first time.

Although prices for some 2013 Malibu models are higher, revised styling, a new base engine and more standard safety equipment all play into the vehicle's value proposition. And with half the model range seeing a price cut for 2013, now may be the best time to compare Chevrolet's mid-size sedan to the competition.

What it means to you: The 2013 Malibu is more spacious and has a more powerful base engine than the 2012 model. The mid-range and top-of-the-line versions are priced lower, too.
