ADDITIONAL MODEL INFORMATION
2012 Hyundai Genesis Coupe

author photo by Jeffrey Archer
  • Both four- and six-cylinder versions of the 2013 Genesis Coupe offer more power and torque than last year's model.
  • Exterior changes include a revised front fascia and new taillights, while interior updates are highlighted by a new center stack.
  • Expect the 2013 Genesis Coupe to arrive in dealers this spring with slightly increased prices over 2012 models.

In addition to revealing a new turbocharged variant of its funky Veloster hatchback at this year's Detroit Auto Show, Hyundai also chose the show as the launching pad for an updated version of its sporty Genesis Coupe. Featuring new front and rear fascias and revised powertrains, the 2013 Genesis Coupe is expected to begin arriving at dealers this spring.

The most exciting news about the 2013 Genesis Coupe is under the hood. Thanks to a revised engine featuring direct injection, six-cylinder versions of the sporty coupe now produce a whopping 348 horsepower, an increase of nearly 40 horses over last year's model. Torque is also up, jumping to 296 pound-feet from last year's peak output of 266. According to Hyundai, that means the Genesis V6 can reach 60 miles per hour from a standing stop in just over 5 seconds flat.

The four-cylinder Genesis also benefits from a major power boost for the new model year thanks to a revised turbocharger and intercooler setup. According to Hyundai, the Genesis 2.0T now makes 274 hp, up from last year's total of just 201. Like the V6, the four-cylinder's torque is also increased compared to last year, with the 2013 Genesis 2.0T producing 275 lb-ft - an increase of more than 50 lb-ft over the 2012 model.

Also newly available for both Genesis Coupe models is an 8-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. Although a 6-speed manual remains standard, the new transmission replaces last year's 5-speed as an option for buyers who don't want to row their own gears. Hyundai says the new 8-speed auto is capable of 18 miles per gallon in city driving and up to 28 mpg on the highway, making it more efficient than both its predecessor and the standard manual transmission.

While most of the major changes to the 2013 Genesis Coupe are under the hood, the sports car also features some updates to its interior and exterior. Revisions include a restyled front fascia, new headlights and taillights and more aggressive fog lights. Inside, new features range from a redesigned center stack to a new electroluminescent gauge cluster.

Hyundai hasn't announced pricing for the 2013 Genesis Coupe, but we don't expect the updated model will carry a considerable premium over today's base prices of around $23,000 for a four-cylinder and $27,500 for a Genesis V6.

What it means to you: Expect a great deal on leftover 2012s as Hyundai makes room for the muscular new Genesis.
