ADDITIONAL MODEL INFORMATION
2013 Hyundai Santa Fe

author photo by Doug DeMuro
  • Santa Fe priced from $29,195
  • All-wheel drive adds $1,750
  • Limited model starts at $33,945

The 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe will be priced from $29,195 with shipping when it goes on sale in the coming weeks. That's only slightly more expensive than the Hyundai Veracruz it replaces, and around $3,000 more than the smaller Santa Fe Sport.

According to Hyundai, the $29,195 figure buys a base-level, front-wheel-drive Santa Fe GLS. Upgrading to all-wheel drive adds $1,750 to the bottom line. That means northern drivers will see prices start well above $30,000 -- especially once options are added.

For the upscale Santa Fe Limited, drivers should expect prices start at $33,945. Once again, all-wheel drive adds $1,750 to the model's price for a total of $35,695. While that's touching on premium SUV territory, Limited models will likely add high-dollar features, such as a backup camera and leather seats.

The new Santa Fe is not to be confused with the similarly named Santa Fe Sport. While the Sport, which debuted last summer, seats only five, the Santa Fe offers seven seats in three rows. And the Santa Fe Sport uses only 4-cylinder motors, while the Santa Fe offers a V6.

That V6 is a powerful 3.3-liter unit that produces a muscular 290 horsepower. That's 26 more horses than the top-level Santa Fe Sport 2.0T, and 30 more than the outgoing Hyundai Veracruz. The Veracruz, which also seated seven passengers in three rows, was Hyundai's earlier entry into the large SUV segment.

Hyundai says the 2013 Santa Fe will arrive at dealers shortly. Fuel economy is rated at 18 miles per gallon in the city and 25 mpg on the highway for 2-wheel-drive models. All-wheel drive lowers only the highway figure, bringing it down to 24 mpg.

Those figures are in line with gas mileage numbers from many rivals. The 2-wheel-drive Honda Pilot, for instance, also returns 18 mpg city and 25 mpg highway. The V6-powered Toyota Highlander gets 18 mpg city and 24 mpg highway, while the Ford Explorer is rated at 17 mpg city and 24 mpg highway.

What it means to you: The 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe adds another option to the growing 3-row crossover market.
