  • Maserati unveils the 2013 GranTurismo Sport in Geneva
  • Powered by a 4.7-liter V8 producing 460 horsepower
  • Slated for release in the US as a 2013 model

Maseratis aren’t simply about high-performance and horsepower. Every Maserati must also incorporate elegance and passenger comfort. The GranTurismo Sport handily meets both marks.

The updated 4.7-liter V8 engine now produces 460 horsepower and 384 pound feet of torque. Although it’s a high-power engine, Maserati claims it doesn’t suffer from high fuel consumption and emissions output but didn’t release any emissions of fuel consumption numbers. Maserati has mated the powerful V8 with an updated six-speed automatic transmission for the US market. Together, the V8 and its high-tech transmission carry the GranTurismo Sport from 0 to 60 MPH in 4.8 seconds and will hit a top speed of 185 MPH.

The GranTurismo Sport benefits from Maserati’s updated Sport Skyhook suspension system that not only has an awesome name but also provides continuous dampening. The re-designed system yields ultimate passenger comfort and increased driving enjoyment. With both normal and SPORT modes, the suspension can be tuned to match driver’s needs for performance or comfort and ride quality.

Updates for the GranTurismo Sport aren’t limited to the engine and suspension. The front bumper, too, has been redesigned to not only look more striking but also improve airflow and cooling of the front brakes. The headlights retain the same shape but the Daytime Running Lights (DRL) have been updated to an LED system. Between to two sets of new LED headlamps is Maserati’s chromed trident with red accents, which is a detail saved for only the most powerful Maseratis. In the rear of the GranTurismo Sport, Maserati has been made even sleeker thanks to new, darkened taillights.

On the interior, the front and rear seats have been made not only better looking but also more ergonomic for improved passenger comfort. New, too, is the steering wheel, which is more ergonomic and designed for sporty driving with a flatter rim and a grip with accentuated profile.

In 2011, the United States was number the one world Maserati market. In spite of this, not all performance features of the 2013 GranTurismo Sport will be available in the US including Maserati’s new electro actuated six-speed transmission capable of gearshifts in less than 100 milliseconds.

What it means to you: Maserati’s surprisingly large GranTurismo Sport gets even faster and sportier for the 2013 model year.
