  • New York retains its power as a place for world debuts.
  • It's also the venue for the World Car of the Year awards.
  • Looks like the crossover is still king in America.

The 2013 New York Auto Show takes place earlier than in recent years. It ties in with Easter. Since this is the last major car show until the fall, the season finishes a little earlier too.

However, there are still plenty of interesting things going on to make this Big Apple event a memorable one. Manufacturers tend to hold a few things back so they can perhaps make a bigger splash in this smaller pool -- as opposed to releasing everything in Detroit, when the whole industry is clamoring for all the attention.

World Debuts

Let's start with the 2014 Acura MDX. This premium 7-seater crossover SUV now moves into its second generation. The 2014 Cadillac CTS midsize sedan represents generation three of one of Cadillac's most highly regarded badges. Redesigned looks meet the marque's first use of a twin-turbocharged V6 engine. Replacing the Jeep Liberty comes the 2014 Jeep Cherokee. Yes, an old name, but a completely fresh model.

A new naming formula turns the Infiniti JX35 into the 2014 Infiniti QX60. It's another premium 7-seater crossover SUV contender, but the 2014 range adds a hybrid model. An average of 26 miles per gallon is pretty good for its class.

The 2014 Toyota Highlander crossover is redesigned for this model year. A hybrid version is anticipated.

Wraps will be pulled from the second-generation 2014 Land Rover Range Rover Sport. Since the newest "big" Range Rover debuted in the fall of 2012, it was only a matter of time before the Sport derivative came along.

The 2014 Honda Odyssey comes to New York with new features. We will also see a revamped 2014 Hyundai Equus luxury full-size sedan, along with spruced-up versions of the 2014 Buick LaCrosse and 2014 Buick Regal.

North American Debuts

Finally, we get a chance to see the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Convertible in the flesh (well, fiberglass).

Despite a lingering aversion to diesel fuel in the United States, the 2014 BMW 328d becomes the first diesel-powered car from the Munich company to make it this side of the Atlantic. It's joined on the stand by the 2014 BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo, a kind of wagon. But since wagons are virtually as unpopular as diesels among American drivers, this taller/longer/tailgated version of the 3 Series looks a bit crossover-ish.

It's still a long wait until they reach the showrooms, but the New York show plays host to the 2015 Volkswagen Golf and 2015 Volkswagen GTI, both ambassadors of the seventh generation and due here in a year.

2013 World Car of the Year awards

Finalists in various categories include the new Mazda6, Scion FR-S/Subaru BRZ, VW Golf Mk VII, Tesla Model S and Jaguar F-Type. The winners will be announced here, having been deliberated over by 66 auto journalists from 23 countries.

AutoTrader.com is reporting from the 2013 New York Auto Show press days on March 27 and 28. The event opens to the public from March 29 to April 7. For more information on the 113th running of this show, click on www.autoshowny.com.

What it means to you: Old favorites are given a new lease on life, plus brand-new models -- it's an exciting show in an exciting city. What's not to like?
