2013 New York Auto Show: What It Means For Car Buyers
- For the sheer range of new production vehicles, this show is remarkable
- Fuel sippers and performance fans find their preferred traits, sometimes in the same car
- And a vacuum cleaner makes national headlines
The 2013 New York Auto Show. Wow. Just wow. So many cars, so many crossovers, such a wide spectrum of vehicles -- from hybrid trucks to track-focused muscle machines. And somewhere in the middle is the all-new 2014 Kia Soul subcompact.
This seems as good a point as anywhere to dive in. Kia's second generation of Soul comes with greater refinement, more space and a larger rear aperture. The company also launched its 2014 Kia Forte Koup, with the option of a turbocharged 201-horsepower engine. And the 2014 Kia Optima midsize sedan displayed a subtle new look, along with a revised interior that includes upgraded seats -- a most welcome feature.
The crossover sport utility vehicle (CUV) keeps on rolling across the nation. The 2014 Toyota Highlander, 2014 Nissan Pathfinder Hybrid, Infiniti QX60 Hybrid, 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Hybrid, 2014 Dodge Durango, 2014 Acura MDX and 2014 Land Rover Range Rover Sport all bring their own new-generation flavors to this ever-popular class.
It seems the 2014 Jeep Cherokee has gained attention not just for reviving an old name or replacing the outgoing Liberty, but also for having a design that's less than conservative. It might just be ahead of its time.
Drove My Chevy to the Gas Station
For a marque that gave us the Volt plug-in hybrid, Chevy still invites us to combust some gasoline in fascinating ways. The 2014 Chevrolet Camaro has received a redesign and brought back a name to send tingles of excitement down the spines of enthusiasts: Z/28. This ultra-sporty, stripped-down version makes around 500 hp from its 7.0-liter V8 engine.
However, New York saw Chevy spring a whole new car on us -- the 2014 Chevrolet SS sedan. This 4-door has a classic American layout: a V8 up front and driven wheels at the rear. Its 6.2-liter engine is basically the same as the one in the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray; it makes 415 hp in this application (as opposed to the 'Vette's 450 hp). Think of it as a family-friendly Camaro.
Drove My BMW to the Diesel Pump
It could be a brave move, bringing a diesel 3 Series into the United States. But the 2014 BMW 328d should still provide the kind of drive for which BMW is renowned, plus some enviable fuel consumption figures.
Honda Loves a Vacuum
That's why there's one of the little suckers available in the 2014 Honda Odyssey minivan. No more Cheerios or hairy bits of candy strewn about the cabin, Odyssey owners can now enjoy one of the most useful pieces of in-car equipment ever -- provided that they buy the top-of-the-range Touring Elite version. As well as the HondaVac, the Odyssey also offers more automotive tech such as forward collision and lane departure alerts.
World Car of the Year
The 2015 Volkswagen Golf. Even though it's the honoree for 2013, it will be next year when Americans can buy one. The 2014 Porsche Boxster/Cayman took the Performance Car award and the 2014 Tesla Model S won the Green Car category.
Best of the Rest
Hyundai brought along a refreshed Equus, the company's upscale flagship sedan. The 2014 Cadillac CTS debuted, marking the third generation of this domestic rival to the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class. Mercedes-Benz introduced its smallest-ever AMG model, the 2014 CLA 45. Jaguar decided to supercharge its big sedan to create the 550-hp 2014 XJR. The 2014 Scion tC displayed a number of updates both inside and out. The subcompact class should have a new kid this fall in the shape of the 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage.
What it means to you: The 2013 New York Auto Show gave us a dizzying array of new production vehicles.
