  • Racy styling with large side intakes
  • Lighter, more powerful and more fuel-efficient
  • Newly available performance and economy technologies

The third-generation 2013 Porsche Boxster was unveiled at the Geneva Auto Show with dramatic new styling inside and out. The next Boxster is lighter and more powerful than before. It's also more economical, with Porsche claiming a fuel efficiency gain of up to 15 percent. The 2013 Boxster's new 265-horsepower 2.7-liter engine is smaller but more powerful than the current Boxster's. The 3.4-liter remains in the 2013 Boxster S, but output is increased to 315 horsepower.

Styling of the Boxster's lightweight body is reminiscent of Porsche's Carrera GT supercar. Scalloped doors and wide sills direct air toward large body-side intakes. The new car rides on a longer wheelbase and a wider track, its larger wheels pushed to the corners for a firmly planted stance. The cover for the power top is omitted on the 2013. Instead, part of the lowered roof's canvas remains exposed, but rests flush with the body for a finished look.

The interior also evokes Carrera GT styling, with a raked center console that descends gently from the dash to the center armrest. That detail is making its way across Porsche's product lineup, recently appearing on the new 911.

Porsche also places an emphasis on efficiency in all of its recent models, and the new Boxster is no exception. A start-stop function is standard. Lighter weight, electric power steering and electrical system recuperation all contribute to fuel economy gains. EPA estimates are not yet available for apples-to-apples comparison among US fuel economy ratings.

Porsche says the new car is most efficient with the optional PDK seven-speed transmission, available in place of the standard six-speed manual on both the Boxster and the Boxster S. It's quickest too, thanks to power delivery uninterrupted by gear changes.

Both the Boxster and Boxster S have the benefit of more power. The 2.7-liter is new, based on the Boxster S motor. Porsche offers performance-enhancing options as well, like a torque-vectoring differential and the Sport Chrono package, which includes dynamic transmission mounts.

Porsche's new open-top two-seater should arrive early this summer, just in time to enjoy the warm weather. Starting price for the Boxster will be $49,500 or $60,900 for the S.

What it means to you: The third generation of Porsche's most accessible sports car has arrived with the style and the substance for high-performance driving.
