2014 BMW 3 Series GT: Geneva Auto Show
- Longer, taller and wider than the 3 Series Sports Wagon
- Sloping roofline with power rear liftgate
- Arrives in the U.S. summer 2013
The newest addition to the 3 Series lineup, the 2014 BMW 3 Series GT, made its world debut at the Geneva Auto Show. Although its proportions belie its size, the GT, or Gran Turismo, is the largest vehicle in the 3 Series lineup; it's longer and taller than even the 3 Series Sport Wagon. It also has more cargo and passenger space. BMW says the 328i GT and 335i GT will arrive on U.S. shores this summer.
Compared with the wagon, the Gran Turismo is nearly eight inches longer and more than three inches taller. Although passengers sit higher in the GT than in other 3 Series variants, the bigger body means more headroom. For rear-seat passengers, three inches of additional legroom is afforded by the longer body and by a wheelbase that's been stretched more than four inches.
The 3 Series GT also offers a bit more cargo space behind the rear seat, despite its sloping roofline. The power-operated rear liftgate opens up to 18.3 cubic feet of cargo space by the European measurement standard. Specifications for the U.S. model may vary slightly. The cargo area is fitted with hooks and tie-down points and is illuminated by LED lighting strips.
Two engine choices will be offered for U.S. customers, both advanced engines that use turbochargers and direct fuel injection to maximize performance and economy. The 328i GT is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, while the 335i GT uses a 300-horsepower 3.0-liter six-cylinder. Regardless of engine choice, the 3 Series GT is equipped with an 8-speed automatic transmission.
When the 3 Series GT arrives in the U.S. later this year, customers can choose from a range of trim choices including BMW's Sport, Luxury and Modern Lines as well as the M Sport line, which includes performance-minded touches like 18- or 19-inch wheels, a lowered suspension and sport seats.
Complete specifications, pricing information and official EPA fuel economy ratings are yet to come for the 2014 BMW 3 Series GT, but we expect more information to arrive soon, just ahead of the Gran Turismo's U.S. arrival.
What it means to you: The newest member of the 3 Series lineup is the most spacious and possibly the most practical. Look for it in BMW showrooms later this year.
