ADDITIONAL MODEL INFORMATION
2013 BMW 5 Series

  • 2014 BMW 5-Series offers slightly revised styling
  • New diesel-powered 535d available
  • 5-Series GT hatchback also updated for 2014

Several changes are coming to the BMW 5-Series lineup for 2014. BMW recently announced several updates to its midsize sedan for the new model year, including a face-lift and a new engine. And updates aren't confined to the sedan: BMW is also changing the 5-Series GT hatchback.

The biggest news for 2014 is the addition of a diesel model to the 5-Series lineup. Available only as a sedan, the 535d will be powered by a 3.0-liter turbodiesel 6-cylinder. The engine makes just 255 horsepower but delivers a whopping 413 lb-ft of torque. That means it'll feel fast at lower speeds, such as in the city and on highway on-ramps.

Of course, the 535d also will offer exceptional gas mileage. In the smaller 3-Series, the same engine is good for 23 miles per gallon city and 36 mpg highway. That's far better than the 19 mpg city and 28 mpg highway of the gas-powered 335i. The Environmental Protection Agency has not yet rated the 535d, but we expect only slightly lower numbers for the larger sedan.

BMW is giving the 5-Series sedan a minor face-lift for 2014, as well. On the outside, both front and rear bumpers are revised. Inside, the sedan boasts larger storage units and chrome trim. Possibly the biggest update is the touchpad now included in the 5-Series' iDrive system. That means drivers can type instead of using the circular iDrive controller to scroll through an on-screen keyboard.

The 5-door 5-Series GT hatchback is also updated for 2014. The GT's exterior changes are more substantial than the sedan's, and include new headlights and taillights as well as revised front and rear bumpers. Inside, the cargo area is enlarged for more room, while the GT's iDrive also uses the same new touchpad as its sedan counterpart.

BMW says the 2014 5-Series range will start with the 528i, at $50,425. The new 535d is priced from $57,525 with rear-wheel drive or $59,825 with all-wheel drive. The updated 5-Series goes on sale in August.

What it means to you: For most shoppers, the biggest news about the 2014 BMW 5-Series is the addition of the all-new, diesel-powered 535d.
