ADDITIONAL MODEL INFORMATION
2014 Buick Regal

  • Standard 2-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder
  • Available all-wheel drive
  • Newly available safety features

Buick announced updates for the latest version of its midsize sedan, including a new base engine, available all-wheel drive (AWD) and newly available high-tech safety features. Buick's eAssist mild hybrid setup remains available for efficiency-conscious drivers. But drivers who stick to the base engine now get more power than before thanks to the new turbocharged 4-cylinder.

A turbo was available for the 2013 model year, too, in both the Regal GS and Regal Turbo. The Regal GS model remains, but the Regal Turbo model is being dropped since the turbo now comes standard. In both the 2014 Regal and Regal GS, the 2-liter 4-cylinder is rated at 259 horsepower -- more than the 2013 Regal Turbo but shy of the 270-hp 2013 Regal GS. The upside is better fuel economy: 21 miles per gallon city and 30 mpg highway for both models.

The mild hybrid 2014 Buick Regal eAssist handily tops those numbers with a 36-mpg hwy fuel economy rating. But choosing the optional engine bumps up the price, too. With eAssist, the Regal is priced from $32,485 including destination charge. That's a nearly $2,000 premium over the base model, which starts at $30,615 including destination.

For about the same money as the Regal eAssist, buyers can instead opt for all-wheel drive, a newly available option for both Regal and Regal GS. Sending power to all four wheels can be helpful for drivers who live in wintry climates. The 2014 Buick Regal AWD starts at $32,790. The Regal GS AWD, meanwhile, is priced at $40,195, a premium of $2,365 over the front-wheel-drive Regal GS.

For the first time on the Regal, Buick also offers advanced driver assistance features in two new safety equipment packages. The Driver Confidence 1 package includes forward collision alert, a blind spot monitor, lane change alert, lane departure warning and rear cross traffic alert. The Driver Confidence 2 package adds adaptive cruise and a collision preparedness function. The first package adds just $1,090 to the bottom line. The second is a pricier $2,295 option that requires the Driver Confidence 1 package, as well.

Although one model, the Regal Turbo, is absent from the 2014 lineup, Buick has still expanded choices for drivers by offering all-wheel drive and more advanced safety features. And the base price for the Regal hasn't changed much this year. Even with the new engine, it's about $700 more than the 2013 Regal.

What it means to you: Drivers can now opt for all-wheel drive and some advanced safety features for the 2014 Buick Regal.
