What Is It?

The 2014 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 is a high-performance version of the popular Chevrolet Camaro. Officially designed for the racetrack (but legal for the street), the Camaro Z/28 boasts a huge engine and many other sporty upgrades over the standard Camaro.

The Camaro Z/28's most important feature is under the hood, where it houses a huge 7.0-liter V8 borrowed from today's Chevrolet Corvette Z06 -- an engine that's rated at 500 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. Mated only to a standard 6-speed manual transmission, the engine uses an impressive dual-exhaust system that will make the car especially loud at high speeds.

Beyond its engine, the Camaro Z/28 also includes a lot of other upgrades for optimal racetrack performance. For example, the car boasts standard 15-inch carbon ceramic brake discs that are especially fade-resistant under hard driving. Also included are Pirelli P-Zero tires, an upgraded suspension and a series of weight-saving measures designed to make the Z/28 as light as possible.

In addition to its huge engine and other performance upgrades, the Camaro Z/28 also includes many exterior revisions over the workaday Camaro. Such items include huge alloy wheels, a large rear wing, a pronounced front splitter and a rear diffuser.

How Much?

The Camaro Z/28 will start at around $75,000 with shipping.

When Can You Get It?

Spring 2014

Add It to Your Shopping List Because...

The 2014 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 is now the second high-performance Camaro model to join the car's lineup, after the raucous ZL1. Drivers looking for the ultimate in Camaro performance will need to choose between one or the other. For all-out speed, there's the ZL1, which boasts 580 hp and 556 lb-ft of torque. Shoppers more interested in track performance will gravitate towards the Z/28, which offers a lighter curb weight and improved braking and handling dynamics.

Other Cars to Consider

Chevrolet Corvette -- While we love the idea of a Camaro Z/28, it's hard to wrap our heads around a $75,000 Camaro, especially when the Corvette starts at under $55,000 with shipping. It may not be as fast, but the Corvette offers more of a true sports-car image that many shoppers will likely prefer.

Dodge Challenger SRT8 -- The full-size Dodge Challenger touts exciting retro styling and a high-performance SRT8 version. At 470 hp, it's not quite as fast as the Z/28, and it'll be nowhere near as quick on a racetrack -- but it's also a lot cheaper, with a base price of around $45,000.

Ford Mustang -- The newly redesigned Ford Mustang doesn't offer high-performance models just yet, but we expect that it will in the near future. Something like the outgoing Shelby GT500, for example, could provide a strong challenge to the Camaro Z/28.
