  • Valet mode lets drivers lock valuables, info
  • Included in newly available MyLink
  • Available this spring in 2014 Impala

Many car owners are familiar with valet keys, which limit access to a car's trunk or glove box. But the 2014 Chevrolet Impala takes the valet key one step further. The new sedan will offer a valet mode, which includes locking storage and restricts access to personal information.

The Impala's valet mode uses the sedan's available center-mounted MyLink touchscreen. When drivers activate it, valet mode locks the screen in place, restricting access to a storage compartment behind it. The bin can fit mobile phones and other electronics. That keeps away valets, car wash attendants and others who may briefly drive the car.

But the Impala's valet mode doesn't just lock the screen in place. It also prompts users to enter a code before they can access MyLink's functions. That means a driver's phone contacts and stored destinations are protected when valet mode is activated.

To enable valet mode, drivers must go to MyLink's settings menu and press "valet mode." There, they create a 4-digit PIN code, which they re-enter to verify. Turning off valet mode requires re-entering the PIN code, which is prompted before other MyLink operations are possible.

According to Chevrolet, valet mode is standard with the Impala's MyLink infotainment system. MyLink also syncs with mobile phones, allowing drivers to use apps and enjoy Internet radio. MyLink is optional on all base-level Impala LS models, and standard on the mid-level Impala LT and high-end Impala LTZ.

MyLink is a central feature in the Impala's dashboard, which was designed to include the system's 8-inch touchscreen. MyLink also features a navigation system, marking the first time Chevrolet has ever offered navigation in its full-size Impala.

Unveiled at last year's New York Auto Show, the 2014 Impala will offer three engines. Base models use a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder that makes 195 horsepower. Hybrid eAssist models use a 182-horsepower four. At the top end of the sedan's range is a 3.6-liter V6 that produces a muscular 303 hp.

The 2014 Impala goes on sale this spring. Pricing starts at $27,535 with shipping for an Impala LS. The Impala LT starts at $29,785, while the base price of an upscale Impala LTZ is nearly $35,000.

What it means to you: Valet mode gives drivers peace of mind when they drop off their 2014 Chevrolet Impala with a valet.
