  • 2014 Silverado to start at $24,585
  • Sierra will be $500 more due to new equipment
  • New 5.3-liter V8 makes 355 horsepower, 383 lb-ft

General Motors recently revealed pricing and some engine specs for its upcoming full-size pickups, the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and 2014 GMC Sierra. Both trucks debuted at the Detroit Auto Show earlier this year.

The automaker announced the trucks will be no more expensive than their 2013 counterparts. That means a base-level 2014 Silverado should start at $24,585 including shipping. A base-level extended-cab model will start around $30,500, while a 4-door Silverado crew cab will be closer to $36,000 before options. The top-end Silverado, a leather-trimmed LTZ Crew Cab, should start around $41,000.

As for the Sierra, GM says pricing will be $500 more than last year's model across the board -- a fact the company says is due to extra standard equipment. That means a 2014 Sierra should start around $25,000, while an extended cab model will be closer to $31,000. A Sierra crew cab will start around $36,500. And the highly luxurious Sierra Denali will likely start around $51,500.

Although three engines will be offered in the Silverado and Sierra, GM only announced details about one. That's a 5.3-liter V8 that will stand as the models' mid-level powerplant. It's also the only engine that will be available at first when the Silverado and Sierra start production early this summer.

GM says the new 5.3-liter V8 makes 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque. That's a major boost over last year's 5.3-liter V8, which made just 315 hp and 355 lb-ft. GM also says the new direct-injected engine is more efficient. The automaker pegs gas mileage at 16 miles per gallon city and 23 mpg highway. That's up from last year's 15 mpg city/21 mpg highway.

Despite the power boost, GM's new 5.3-liter V8 still falls short of the Ford F-150's EcoBoost V6. That engine makes 365 hp and a whopping 420 lb-ft of torque. But the 5.3-liter V8 is more powerful than standard V8 engines in the Nissan Titan, RAM 1500 and Toyota Tundra.

Although pricing and some engine details are now official, we hope to learn about the other powertrains in the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra closer to the trucks' launch this summer.

What it means to you: The Silverado and Sierra are only a few months away from arriving at dealers.
