  • Blasts from 0 to 60 mph in under four seconds
  • Runs the quarter-mile in 12 seconds at 119 mph
  • Priced under $57,000 with Z51 Performance package

To prove the new 2014 Corvette Stingray is quick, Chevrolet tested it recently at Virginia International Raceway's (VIR) Grand East Course, a twisty, 4.2-mile racing track. With the optional Z51 Performance package, the new Vette lapped the course in a brisk 2:51:78. Chevrolet also posted the Stingray Z51's equally impressive performance figures: 0 to 60 miles per hour in just 3.8 seconds and the quarter-mile in 12 seconds at 119 mph.

That's quick. Several supercars can match or beat those numbers, but few can compare with the 2014 Corvette on price. With the Z51 package and Magnetic Ride Control -- the optional adaptive suspension fitted to the VIR test car -- the Corvette Stingray is priced at $56,590, including a $995 destination charge.

The Z51 package adds $2,800 to the Corvette's $51,995 base price and brings track-ready gear-like performance brakes with slotted rotors, a dry sump oil system, performance suspension upgrades, an electronic limited-slip differential, cooling for the differential and transmission, aerodynamic upgrades and 19-inch front and 20-in rear wheels. The larger, wider wheels and tires contribute to lateral grip of 1.03 g for the Z51 Corvette.

Optional Magnetic Ride Control adds $1,795 to the bottom line. The adaptive suspension system constantly monitors and adjusts to road conditions to balance comfort and control.

Output from the Corvette's V8 engine is not affected by the Z51 package. The 6.2-liter V8 uses direct fuel injection and high compression to crank out 455 horsepower. More power is available, however. The $1,195 dual-mode performance exhaust system bumps output to 460 horsepower.

That still keeps the price under $58,000 while piling on the most useful of the 2014 Corvette Stingray's optional performance equipment. And though a handful of the world's fastest sports cars may match the latest Vette's performance, expect to pay twice as much for the least expensive among them. Look for the 2014 Stingray to arrive in Chevrolet showrooms this fall.

What it means to you: Ready for the track but not so anxious to fork over $150,000 for an exotic supercar? Get in line for the upcoming 2014 Corvette. Few -- if any -- can match its sporting bang for the buck.
