When the 2014 Denver Auto Show comes to the Colorado Convention Center from April 9 to April 13, it will demonstrate one of the great things about car shows. Should a potential buyer want to compare the amount of rear passenger space in the 2014 Ford Escape, say, with the 2014 Mazda CX-5, it's merely a matter of going to the relevant stand, climbing into the vehicle in question, then walking over to the other and doing the same thing. That's a lot less hassle than driving from one dealership to another across town, and at no time does some overly pushy salesman get to bother anyone.

There's no substitute for seeing the cars up close and near each other. Things like trunk space, ease of entry and exit, headroom and visibility are often overlooked when we're doing our initial calculations of monthly payments and fuel costs. Residents of the Mile-High City will be able to check out all the finer details of vehicles on their shopping lists.

Some manufacturers are also offering ride-and-drive trips. Chevrolet, Mazda and Kia have several vehicles ready for action, while vehicle sizes range from the 2014 FIAT 500 subcompact to the imposing 2014 RAM 1500 pickup. Be sure to visit Camp Jeep to see how Jeep vehicles can tackle obstacles that would stop regular cars in their tracks.

This could be the first time for many Denver residents to see many of next year's models in the metal. Hotly anticipated cars such as the 2015 Ford Mustang and 2015 VW GTI, plus truck stars including the 2015 Ford F-150 and 2015 Cadillac Escalade, are all expected.

Looking further into the future, green technology is represented by hydrogen-powered fuel-cell vehicles from Mercedes-Benz and Toyota. All-electric vehicles such as the 2014 Ford Focus Electric, 2014 Cadillac ELR and the 2014 BMW i3 offer the option of battery power, while the plug-in 2014 Porsche Panamera S E-Hybrid brings performance, luxury and fuel savings.

For those who aspire to own life's poshest products, the exotic-car showcase will feature machines from Aston Martin, Bentley, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati and Porsche.

If all this is a bit too serious, take a stroll over to the Hyundai Zombie Survival Machine or the Kia GT4 Stinger concept coupe for some light relief and some cool metal. Or there's always the aftermarket section for accessories, audio systems, vehicle wraps, electric karts and much more.

To get to the Colorado Convention Center, enter "700 14th St., Denver, Colo." into the satellite navigation, or consult the local public transport system. Opening hours are 5 to 10 p.m. on Wednesday, April 9; noon to 10 p.m. Thursday and Friday; 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday; and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday.

Admission is free to military personnel (active and retired) on Wednesday, while seniors 65 or older get in for $5 on Thursday. General admission is $10 for adults, $5 for kids ages 6 to 12 and free for children under 6. Group discounts are available. Attendees who complete a survey are entered to win one of 15 gas cards valued at $1,000. For more information, visit paragonexpo.com.
