What is it?

Unveiled at the 2013 New York Auto Show, the 2014 Dodge Durango is a heavily revised version of the current model. The full-size SUV still features three-row seating and V6 or V8 power, but now includes an eight-speed automatic transmission for improved gas mileage. It also offers Chrysler's center-mounted Uconnect 8.4-inch touchscreen and the Dodge brand's signature "racetrack" taillights. Rounding out major changes is a newly available dual-screen Blu-ray/DVD player.

How much?

Though Dodge hasn't finalized pricing, we expect the 2014 Durango to start around $30,000 with shipping.

When can you get it?

The new Durango will arrive in dealerships this fall.

Add it to your shopping list because...

With its upgraded interior and competitive pricing, the Durango was already a good contender in the large SUV world. The 2014 Dodge Durango improves on that formula with a more efficient powertrain and upgraded styling. And it offers new technology for drivers who enjoy the latest gadgets. Chrysler's optional Uconnect system, for example, includes a large 8.4-inch touchscreen that features mobile apps like Pandora and iHeartradio. It also turns the vehicle into a Wi-Fi hotspot so you can connect your laptop or iPad.

Other cars to consider:

Ford Explorer - the popular Explorer is among the Durango's biggest competitors. With a starting price of around $30,000, it also touts three rows and all of the latest technology. And while there's no V8 engine for the Explorer, it does offer a fuel-saving 4-cylinder.

Honda Pilot - the midsize Pilot is smaller than the Durango, but it's also more efficient. Power comes solely from a V6 and three-row seating is standard. Pricing also starts around $30,000.

Toyota Highlander - Toyota's midsize Highlander provides more three-row competition for the Durango. The Highlander offers V6 or 4-cylinder engines, with better fuel economy and a more car-like ride than the Durango.

Used Toyota Sequoia - For those who need to tow, the Durango is a good choice. But it's also worth checking out a used Toyota Sequoia, which like the Durango uses a body-on-frame chassis and has an available V8. At more than $42,000, new versions are fairly pricey, but used models are a good alternative for large SUV shoppers.
