  • Powermat wireless charging for mobile phones
  • Included with CUE infotainment system
  • Coming to more Cadillac models soon

Cadillac announced that it will include Powermat wireless charging in several of its luxury models, starting with the 2015 Cadillac ATS. When equipped with the CUE infotainment system, the compact sedan and coupe -- also the most affordable Cadillac model -- will allow drivers and passengers to charge a compatible mobile device without the hassle of chargers or cables.

In the ATS, the Powermat wireless-charging station is located behind a door in the center stack. Users can continue to send or answer calls while the device charges, provided that it's paired to CUE via a Bluetooth connection. The CUE system for the 2015 ATS also includes a text-to-voice feature that can read text messages aloud, helping drivers to avoid distraction.

Not all phones are capable of wireless charging, but the technology is becoming more common. Wireless chargers are increasingly available, too. Starbucks recently announced that it would begin rolling out Powermat chargers in its coffee shops.

Most mobile phones that include a wireless-charging feature use technology from Powermat competitor Qi, whose chargers are available in models from other brands such as Toyota and Chrysler. Cadillac says that its charger is compatible with devices that use technologies other than Powermat, although it does not specifically name Qi-equipped phones as compatible.

As users demand more from their mobile devices, their devices require more power. Ryan Sanderson, associate director of power supply and storage components at IHS Technology, says that this translates to more demand for convenient charging.

"A recent survey from IHS revealed that 70 percent of consumers charge their mobile phone at least once per day, with 30 percent charging more than once," said Sanderson. "This is driving demand for charging access in multiple locations throughout the day, something wireless charging can address in a more convenient way than the consumer having to carry one or more wired chargers around with them on a daily basis."

After launching wireless-charging technology in the 2015 Cadillac ATS, the automaker says that it will bring Powermat to the CTS and Escalade later this year.

What it means to you: Forget the messy and inconvenient chargers and cables. Powermat technology in the latest Cadillac ATS means that you can safely stow and charge your mobile phone without the hassle of a cord.
