  • Chevrolet City Express to start from $22,950
  • Pricing places it directly in contention with Ford Transit Connect
  • City Express will go on sale in the fourth quarter of 2014

The all-new 2015 Chevrolet City Express will start at $22,950 when it reaches dealerships later this year. That's the latest from Chevrolet, which recently announced the small van's pricing and confirmed several other details.

According to Chevrolet, the City Express's base price tag includes a $995 destination charge. That means the van's price places it a stone's throw from its chief rival, the newly redesigned Ford Transit Connect, which starts at $22,995 with shipping. Both vans are aimed at urban shoppers who need big cargo capacity without sacrificing fuel economy.

Beyond announcing the City Express' base price, Chevrolet also confirmed the van's standard equipment and trim levels. The base-level City Express, known as the LS, will feature power windows, dual rear sliding doors, center-console storage with a file-folder bin, vinyl flooring and a whopping 20 interior cargo-mounting points. City Express vans will also include a 150-amp alternator and a 12-volt power outlet.

Shoppers who step up to the City Express LT will have to pay $24,510 -- including destination -- for the privilege. But they'll get even more equipment, including Bluetooth, cruise control, backup sensors, power locks, keyless entry and power mirrors. Options include a navigation system, a 5.8-inch center-mounted touchscreen, SiriusXM Satellite Radio and a backup camera.

If the City Express looks a little familiar, that's because you've probably already seen it on the road. While the new van doesn't go on sale until the end of 2014, the City Express is largely similar to the Nissan NV200, which debuted for the 2013 model year. Rather than spend big money to develop its own van, Chevrolet partnered with Nissan to offer a slightly modified version of the NV200 for its own use.

Under the hood, the City Express will feature a 131-horsepower 2.0-liter 4-cylinder mated to a continuously variable automatic transmission. It's the same powertrain from the Nissan NV200, though it's not quite as potent as the 169-hp 2.5-liter 4-cylinder in the Transit Connect. Interestingly, both models are expected to return the same 24 miles per gallon in combined city and highway driving.

What it means to you: We already knew the 2015 Chevrolet City Express would rival the Ford Transit Connect, but with pricing officially released, now we know just how closely matched the two will be.
