What Is It?

The 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Convertible is a drop-top version of the brand's high-performance Corvette Z06. While a Corvette Z06 has been available since 2001, the 2015 model year marks the first time that Chevrolet is extending its high-performance Corvette to the convertible body style since the original Corvette Z06 debuted in the 1960s.

On the outside, the Corvette Z06 Convertible boasts the same muscular look as the standard Z06, except, of course, with a folding soft-top in place of a fixed roof. There's a large rear wing, 19-inch aluminum wheels, huge brakes (made even larger if you select the optional Z07 package) and extra ground effects that give the car a low-slung look.

Inside, things are a little more toned down. Just like the standard Z06, the Z06 Convertible boasts an upscale interior that's mostly similar to the regular Corvette's cabin. Upgrades include extra soft-touch materials, a full-leather interior, carbon-fiber accents and a steel-reinforced grab bar for passengers.

We suspect that the grab bar will come in handy, given what's under the Z06's hood. The raucous convertible features a 625-horsepower supercharged V8, which marks an upgrade of more than 100 horses over the outgoing Z06. Like the coupe, the 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Convertible will offer drivers a choice between 7-speed manual or 8-speed automatic transmissions.

How Much?

Chevrolet has not announced pricing, but we expect a hefty bump from the base model's $54,000 figure. Last year's Z06 started around $76,000 with shipping, but we think the latest model will be even more expensive, which means the convertible will be pricier still.

When Can You Get It?

Early 2015

Add It to Your Shopping List Because...

The outgoing Corvette Z06 was already one of our favorite performance cars, thanks to its hugely powerful V8 and surprisingly capable dynamics, but the new one is even more impressive. There's an available automatic transmission for drivers who don't want to row their own gears. There's an upgraded interior for shoppers who want improved luxury. And there's a wild look that goes beyond even the old model's brawny styling. And now, we can look forward to yet another Z06 milestone: a convertible.

Other Cars to Consider

Jaguar F-Type -- The newly released Jaguar F-Type comes in several flavors, including one that boasts a supercharged V8 which makes a whopping 495 hp. It's also gorgeous, and we suspect its handsome design will retain its beauty for years to come.

Nissan GT-R -- There's no convertible version, but the Nissan GT-R still offers some of the most mind-blowing performance available today. No, it's not available with three pedals, but a robust automatic, a powerful turbocharged V6 and standard all-wheel drive are enough to keep us excited.

Porsche 911 Cabriolet -- Although the Porsche 911 only offers a 6-cylinder, we wouldn't count it out as a capable performance car. It's still one of the best-balanced sports cars on the market, and it boasts a luxurious interior to boot.

SRT Viper -- The high-performance SRT Viper doesn't come as a convertible, though we expect it will soon. For now, there's a $100,000 base price, a 640-hp V10 and an impressive list of features that add both luxury and performance.
