ADDITIONAL MODEL INFORMATION
2015 Chevrolet Suburban

  • Chevrolet Tahoe, Suburban rated at 16 mpg city and 23 mpg highway
  • Ratings drop to 16 mpg city and 22 mpg highway with 4-wheel drive
  • GMC Yukon Denali's 6.2-liter V8 rated at 15 mpg city and 21 mpg highway

The all-new 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban will offer improved fuel economy over last year's models. That's the latest from General Motors, which recently released gas mileage figures for the redesigned full-size SUVs and the GMC twins, the Yukon and Yukon XL.

According to Chevrolet, the latest Tahoe and Suburban will reach 16 miles per gallon in the city and 23 mpg in highway driving. Figures are the same for the GMC Yukon and Yukon XL, which share many mechanical components, including an engine and transmission, with the Tahoe and Suburban. Four-wheel-drive versions of the SUVs will keep the 16 mpg city fuel economy rating but will drop to 22 mpg on the highway.

The new fuel economy ratings mark slight gains over last year's Tahoe, Suburban and Yukon. The Environmental Protection Agency says that the 2014 models returned 15 mpg city/21 mpg hwy in both 2- and 4-wheel-drive guise. Last year's Tahoe and Yukon Hybrid, which returned 20 mpg city/23 mpg hwy, won't be returning in the redesigned 2015 model.

Chevrolet's newly released fuel economy figures cover its all-new 5.3-liter engine, which boasts 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque. Drivers interested in more power and more luxury can upgrade to the 2015 GMC Yukon Denali, which includes a standard 6.2-liter V8 with a muscular 420 hp. Denali models return 15 mpg city/21 mpg hwy, which improves on last year's 14 mpg city/18 mpg hwy.

While the 2015 Tahoe, Suburban and Yukon still don't boast excellent gas mileage, this year's fuel economy figures are still an improvement over last year's -- an excellent feat, considering the SUVs offer more power and torque. According to Chevrolet, this was accomplished by reducing weight, adding an extra gear to last year's 5-speed automatic and adding new features, such as cylinder deactivation, aimed squarely at improving efficiency.

If you're interested in a new Tahoe, Suburban or Yukon, General Motors says that the new SUVs will go on sale shortly.

What it means to you: The 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe, Chevrolet Suburban and GMC Yukon may not be compact-car fuel-efficient, but they've managed to return better gas mileage than their predecessors with more power and torque.
