  • 4-cylinder Chrysler 200 returns 23 mpg city/36 mpg hwy
  • V6-powered 200 boasts 19 mpg city/32 mpg hwy
  • Fuel economy numbers are competitive with class leaders such as Camry, Fusion

The fully redesigned 2015 Chrysler 200 will return up to 36 miles per gallon on the highway. That's the latest from Chrysler and the federal government's Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which officially announced the sedan's fuel economy ratings ahead of its on-sale date later this spring.

According to the EPA, the 200's 36 mpg number is for highway fuel economy in models equipped with the sedan's base-level 184-horsepower 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine. The 4-cylinder 200 was also rated at 23 mpg in the city, making the new model 2 mpg more efficient than the outgoing 200 in city driving and 6 mpg better on the highway.

For drivers interested in a little more muscle, Chrysler is also offering the 2015 200 with a 3.6-liter V6 that makes an impressive 295 hp. When equipped with its V6, the 200 returns 19 mpg city/32 mpg hwy, matching the old model in city driving and improving by 3 mpg on the highway. Shoppers who opt for all-wheel drive, which is only available with the V6, will see EPA fuel economy ratings of 18 mpg city/29 mpg hwy.

So how does the new 200 compare to its rivals? A 4-cylinder Toyota Camry returns 25 mpg city/35 mpg hwy, which is similar to the 200's numbers. Base-level Ford Fusion and Honda Accord models, meanwhile, fare a little better, boasting 25 mpg city/37 mpg hwy and 27 mpg city/35 mpg hwy, respectively.

The 200's fuel economy is also competitive with V6-powered rivals. It bests the Volkswagen Passat V6's 20 mpg city/28 mpg hwy, while it's about even with the Toyota Camry V6's 21 mpg city/31 mpg hwy. The best V6 fuel economy in the midsize-sedan class, however, is offered by the Honda Accord: It returns 21 mpg city/34 mpg hwy.

Shoppers interested in the all-new 2015 Chrysler 200 won't have to wait long to check out the fully redesigned sedan, which advertises a huge improvement over its predecessor. The car is expected to reach dealers later this spring, with prices starting at around $23,500 with shipping.

What it means to you: The latest Chrysler 200 is an improvement over last year's 200 in every way, including fuel economy.
