What Is It?

The 2015 Hyundai Genesis is a midsize luxury sedan, and this model year signifies the birth of its second generation.

It might have seemed crazy for Hyundai, a company that did well making lower-cost cars, to enter the premium-sedan race. But the first Genesis was well received. It hit the right notes in build quality, engineering, comfort and convenience.

The heritage enjoyed by European marques was absent, but the Genesis compensated by being slightly larger and offering a lot of standard equipment for a relatively reasonable price.

So, Genesis 2.0. The space and price equation is still there. Gone is the Mercedes-wannabe grille, replaced by something that implies a bolstered confidence on Hyundai's part, and that the car has evolved from imitator to having its own place in the market.

The car is available with a 3.8-liter V6 making 311 horsepower and 293 lb-ft of torque or a 5.0-liter V8 good for 420 hp and 383 lb-ft. In its basic form, the Genesis is rear-wheel drive, but all-wheel drive is now available for 3.8 versions.

Models with the V8 come crammed with equipment, such as the Lexicon audio system that sounds terrific and is also the brand of choice for Rolls-Royce. One of the few options is a full-color head-up display. Every version, however, employs comprehensive safety features as well as state-of-the-art infotainment systems.

If Hyundai cars in general have traditionally been lacking in any specific area, it's dynamics. With the new Genesis, Hyundai tasked British company Lotus Engineering to apply its chassis-tuning expertise. A smart move, as the Genesis 2.0 should be more fun.

How Much?

Starting "below $40,000," says Hyundai. Exact pricing to be announced.

When Can You Get It?

Spring 2014

Add It to Your Shopping List Because...

Although you're in the market for a midsize premium sedan, you can't help feeling ripped off when manufacturers charge a lot for options.

Other Cars to Consider

2014 Audi A6 -- At this level, every car offers high sophistication. Personal taste will have as much influence on the buying decision as anything else. And no one could be judged for having poor taste if they bought an A6. This generation started with the 2012 model year.

2014 BMW 5 Series -- One of the main players in this class, with tempting tech, long-haul comfort and a driver's edge. This generation debuted as a 2010 model.

2014 Cadillac CTS -- As its third generation arrives for 2014, the CTS continues to impress, though some find the driving position a little awkward.

2014 Infiniti M -- On the subject of interior space again, the 2015 Hyundai Genesis has 123 cu ft. The closest competitor is the Infiniti M, with 118.5 cu ft. It doesn't have the smoothest of rides, though.

2014 Jaguar XF -- Now available with all-wheel drive, this car is an interesting alternative to German makes. It was face-lifted in 2011, so a new generation ought to be on the way soon.

2014 Lexus GS -- The GS edges more toward sporty than comfortable. It offers generous standard equipment and the option of a Mark Levinson audio system, which is well worth the money.

2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class -- One of the most technologically advanced cars in this sector, thanks to a mid-cycle refresh last year and the inclusion of many cool gadgets.

Used Lexus LS -- With haggling, a 2011 LS460 could be purchased for $40,000. This is the largest Lexus sedan and so offers plenty of space.

Used Mercedes-Benz S550 -- Go for an icon. A 2008 S550 is feasible for $40,000, and resale values will stay strong.
