  • 2015 Genesis to offer Google Glass compatibility
  • System debuted at this year's Consumer Electronics Show
  • Integrated into Hyundai Blue Link infotainment system

Hyundai will soon become the first automaker to offer in-car compatibility with Google Glass. The brand recently announced the cutting-edge technology at this year's Consumer Electronics Show, noting that the feature will launch later this year in the 2015 Hyundai Genesis sedan

According to Hyundai, the new Google Glass application will be dubbed "Glassware." It integrates with the brand's Blue Link infotainment system, which already provides Hyundai drivers with traffic updates, weather updates and various other features, such as stolen vehicle recovery.

So how does in-car Google Glass work? First, it's important to understand exactly what Google Glass is: a wearable computer (it looks a lot like a pair of eyeglasses) that responds to voice commands and touch inputs from users. The system includes a 5-megapixel camera, Internet connectivity and even Bluetooth.

For in-car use, Google Glass connects wirelessly to Hyundai's Blue Link Glassware system to provide drivers with a wide array of vehicle information and functions. For instance, Glassware can remind drivers about maintenance or inform them about a car's upcoming service needs.

But Hyundai's Blue Link Glassware system goes beyond simple reminders and vehicle information. The automaker says drivers with Google Glass can use the technology to unlock the doors and start the car, virtually eliminating the need for a key. They can also seek out a route and transfer it to the car's navigation system as they get inside.

If you're interested in Glassware, you won't have to wait long to try it out -- provided that you're one of the lucky few with access to the still-developing Google Glass technology. Hyundai says the system will make its debut in the all-new 2015 Genesis sedan, which will be unveiled later this month at the Detroit Auto Show. Genesis sales are expected to start later this year.

What it means to you: The upcoming debut of the all-new 2015 Hyundai Genesis just became far more interesting, as the brand plans to integrate Google Glass connectivity into the high-end sedan.
