  • 2015 Kia Sedona coming to New York Auto Show
  • Minivan will likely feature long list of new features
  • We also expect new styling and a more upscale interior

An all-new Kia Sedona is coming to this year's New York Auto Show. The auto-show debut will likely mark a full redesign for the Sedona, which holds the dubious title of being the oldest minivan on the market today.

While Kia hasn't said much about the new Sedona, we expect that the minivan will offer a comprehensive redesign inside and out. The update will likely make the Sedona competitive with more popular models in the minivan segment, such as the Honda Odyssey and Toyota Sienna.

Shoppers interested in a new minivan will likely welcome the news of a new challenger, since the current segment doesn't include many models. In fact, there are only seven: In addition to the Odyssey and Sienna, shoppers can pick from the smaller Mazda5, the Nissan Quest, and the Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan (the latter two are largely the same).

Shoppers can also pick the current Sedona, which was released for the 2006 model year. That means it's the oldest van on the market -- not a good distinction in the minivan world, which is constantly seeing new innovation and additional comfort and convenience features. An example is the HondaVac, a built-in vacuum cleaner located in the cargo area of upscale Honda Odyssey trim levels.

So what changes will headline the new Sedona's debut? For one, we'd expect a more upscale interior. The current cabin was designed before the recent increase in minivan luxury, and that means the Sedona has some catching up to do.

We'd also expect a lot more equipment. Shockingly, today's Sedona isn't available with a rear-seat entertainment system -- a must-have for many modern parents. The van could also use keyless ignition, an infotainment system and advanced safety features such as forward collision alert and a blind spot monitor, all of which it lacks.

We'll see if Kia agrees with our assessment next month, when the van will be revealed in New York. We'll also see other changes Kia has made to help its van leapfrog to the top of the competitive minivan segment.

What it means to you: The 2015 Kia Sedona has a lot of catching up to do in the minivan world, but we think Kia is up to the challenge.
