2016 Jaguar XE: Geneva Auto Show
What Is It?
Announced at this year's Geneva Auto Show, the 2016 Jaguar XE is Jaguar's long-awaited answer to the BMW 3 Series and other entry-level luxury sedans. Jaguar has been on a quest to become a full-line luxury automaker as of late, and this 3 Series fighter could well become the best-selling vehicle in Jaguar's lineup.
Details are scant at the moment, but we do know that the XE will utilize extensive aluminum construction to save weight, and its all-new platform will likely spawn a future crossover SUV, as well. The engine lineup will start with Jaguar's new Ingenium turbocharged 4-cylinder, which Jaguar describes only as high-output and fuel efficient for now. Europe will also have turbodiesel options; it remains to be seen whether Jaguar will commit to certifying one of its diesel engines for American roads.
There will certainly be at least one uplevel engine option, perhaps in the form of the supercharged V6 that currently powers the XF midsize sedan. As for a high-performance XE, maybe with the F-Type's supercharged V8 -- we can only hope. In any case, expect all-wheel drive to be widely available in snowbelt states.
Given Jaguar's traditional emphasis on value-priced luxury, we expect the XE to be fully competitive with its rivals, which will likely mean a starting price of around $35,000.
When Can You Get It?
Globally, the XE launches in 2015, but it won't arrive on our shores till 2016, according to Jaguar.
Add It to Your Shopping List Because…
You're ready for something other than the usual suspects. Jaguar has a real opportunity here to make some waves with American buyers. We're eager to see the 2016 Jaguar XE in the flesh and see if it lives up to its advance billing.
Other Cars to Consider
BMW 3 Series -- Still the standard in this segment, the 3 Series continues to evolve, now featuring an adult-sized back seat.
Mercedes-Benz C-Class -- There'll likely be a new C-Class by the time the XE comes out, so that's another major bogey on Jaguar's radar.
