  • Buick, GMC adding new GM cars.
  • Buick adding a new Encore crossover.
  • GMC to feature new trucks, SUVs.

Car shoppers pleased with some of the latest offerings from Buick and GMC will soon have several more models to choose from. That's because General Motors recently announced it will introduce nine new or significantly updated Buick and GMC vehicles in the next 12 months.

GMC will also introduce an all-new version of the GMC Canyon. The Canyon will be built in Wentzville, Missouri, but GMC isn't saying when we can expect the new mid-size pickup. Either way, it's good news for truck fans, since the mid-size pickup segment has been called into question recently due to declining sales. The Canyon's future especially looked doubtful, as GM hadn't announced a new version of the truck for the US market, despite revealing one for overseas buyers.

Updated versions of the Buick Enclave and GMC Acadia will lead off the new vehicles when they arrive in dealerships this fall. While the crossovers are similar to their 2012 predecessors, both feature stylistic revisions inside and out, along with a new IntelliLink infotainment system. Already in use in several GM vehicles, the new technology features apps like Pandora Internet radio and allows drivers to connect their smartphones to a center-mounted touchscreen.

After the Enclave and Acadia roll out, Buick will debut its Encore compact crossover. Featuring a 138-horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder, the Encore will start at $24,950 with destination when it arrives in showrooms next year. Rivals will include base-level versions of the Acura RDX and BMW X3, or high-end trim levels of the Ford Escape and Toyota RAV4.

While GM hasn't released many other details, the automaker also says it plans to roll out all-new or updated versions of the Buick Regal and LaCrosse sedans; the GMC Sierra pickup; and the GMC Yukon and Yukon XL SUVs sometime in the next 12 months. But the automaker isn't stopping there.

With the automaker's latest announcement, the Canyon will likely live on for at least a few more years with all new styling. GM has also said they will build a version of the mechanically identical Chevrolet Colorado. We expect to see a new version of that truck around the same time GMC drops the curtain on its latest Canyon.

"While we continue to make strong progress in fuel economy gains on our full-size trucks, we know that there is a group of customers who want the functionality of a truck but may not need full-size pickup," said Tony DiSalle, vice president of Buick and GMC Marketing. "We believe that introducing a new, agile and efficient mid-size Canyon will meet the needs of many pickup buyers."

Stick around in the coming months for full auto show coverage, as we expect to see many of GM's new products unveiled during this season's shows.

What it means to you: Buick and GMC are increasing their competitiveness by keeping their product lineup fresh.
